Does anesthesia(spray) make the teeth any number?!

Question:

Does anesthesia(spray) make the teeth any number?

when i went to my dentist 2 days ago, she told me that i had 3 cavities which needed to be filled. she started working on the first cavity without giving me any anesthesia, because she told me that it was not required, but, it wasnt so! During the treatment, the tooth that she was working on, started to hurt, and it still hurts. I just wanted to know...is it normal to extract a cavity without proper anesthesia? Also, if given spray anesthesia, does it make the teeth numb? I just want the other two cavities to be filled without much pain. Is it even possible to cure these cavities in any other way?

Answers:

I had the same experience... but when I hurt, my dentist shot me with some local anesthetic and I got numb.

The spray (or gel) is a topical anesthetic to numb the gum to make the injection a little easier to take.

The dentist needs to get the local anesthetic (aka Novocaine, but I don't think they use that particular drug much these days) around the nerve that comes out of the bottom of the tooth. That requires an injection, and then you'll be fine.

And, yes, you have to have the tooth drilled and filled. Or pulled.
