How long is a crown supposed to last?!

Question: specifically a front tooth porcelain crown with silver back.

Answers: specifically a front tooth porcelain crown with silver back.

The lifespan of a crown depends on many different things.

#1: What material was used in the crown. There are different types of metal. Even being a silver color doesn't tell someone what type of metal was used. It could be non-precious, semi-precious, or high noble metal. The high noble would be the strongest and would fit the best, so that one would last the longest.

#2: What types of habits does a person have. Do they grind their teeth? Do they bite off hard things with their front teeth? Do they have a job or a hobby where they might risk getting hit in the mouth?

#3: What type of oral health care do they have? If someone has a crown done and then doesn't have it checked and x-rayed at least once a year, then there is no way to tell if there are problems with the crown. Also, if they have poor home care, such as not brushing properly, not going to get a professional cleaning at least once a year, and not flossing, then they run the risk of recurrent decay developing at the edge of the crown. If they have a high sugar intake, such as drinking alot of sodas or eating alot of sweets, and they don't brush afterwards, they run the risk of recurrent decay. In that case, it isn't the crown that failed, it is that a new cavity developed at the edge of the crown and grew up under the crown.

On average, a crown could last between 10-20 yrs. Depending on all the above, someone could be closer to the 10 yr. mark or more towards the 20+ yr. mark.

Many people incorrectly assume that just because a tooth is crowned, that it will no longer need any work, and that isn't true. Crowns are like tires, eventually they will need to be replaced. It all has to do with the care that is taken with them and the "milage" you put on them.

Crowns should last between 15 and 20 years, depending on the material, etc... It also depends if you take good care of it.

for ever.
well, i take that back. I got a crown age 5, and now im 15, and my last babytooth already felldown, so i lasted about 10 years with it. wow

I had bridges and several crowns fitted about twenty five years ago. My upper and lower front teeth were included in this. They are still OK. A lot depends on how good your dentist is. A friend of mine had a single crown fitted about a year ago and its lifted three times.

It depends on your general health if you are a diabetic then you will have co-lateral complications relating your mouth like bone loss and other oral diseases....if you are 100% healthy then you have to rely on the technician who casted it in the dental laboratory,if the perforations are left it may give problems or if the metal is not fused properly with porcelain that could be the other reoson there are many factors .
If done properly and you maintain your oral hygiene it could last for entire life .

This all depends on if you have a good dentist. A dentist who does a good job on a crown should make it last 20 + years. One important step your dentist dose is something called "cord packing". After he is done drilling away much of the tooth surface for the crown to fit over it s/he should apply some thread-like material under your gums before the final impression. This assures the crown sits under the gum properly which guards it against decay under the crown. This step is sometimes skipped by dentists but is very important in order to give your crown a long decay free life.
