Any relief for a teeth-grinder??!

Question: I've been grinding my teeth for years, at night, whenever things get stressful. At this point in my life, it's gotten kind of bad. There is unbelievable tension and discomfort in my jaw and ears, even my neck. Does anyone have any remedies (aside from getting rid of stress, which isn;t an option for now)?

Your dentist can fit you with a mouth guard to protect your teeth during sleep.

If stress is causing you to grind your teeth, ask your doctor or dentist about options to reduce your stress. Attending stress counseling, starting an exercise program, seeing a physical therapist or obtaining a prescription for muscle relaxants are among some of the options that may be offered.

Other tips to stop teeth grinding include:

Avoid or cut back on foods and drinks that contain caffeine, such as colas, chocolate, and coffee.
Avoid alcohol. Grinding tends to intensify after alcohol consumption.
Do not chew on pencils or pens or anything that is not food. Avoid chewing gum as it allows your jaw muscles to get more used to clenching and makes you more likely to grind your teeth.
Train yourself not to clench or grind your teeth. If you notice that you clench or grind during the day, position the tip of your tongue between your teeth. This practice trains your jaw muscles to relax.
Relax your jaw muscles at night by holding a warm washcloth against your cheek in front of your earlobe.

Hope this helps!

I am a grinder as well as a snorer! I wear a sports mouthpiece at night....it was cheaper than an official dental office model....and it stopped both, as long as I wear it.

Go to your local pharmacy and get a teeth guard.

Pick up a Doctor's Nightguard mouth guard for when you sleep. It'll cushion your teeth and prevent damage.

There are these things called Sleepright that you can buy at Target or meijers..that help that..I have the same problem..or the have a website www.sleepright.com..check it out

This Isn't Really A Remidie
But If You Have A Mouth Gard or Something Similar
When You Feel Like Grinding Your Teeth Put That In Your Mouth.

try taking some ibuprofen at night. see a dentist or you can get mouth guards for teeth grinding at your pharmacy

You need to go to a dentist immediately. Only he/she can get a mouth piece that will reduce or eliminate your teeth grinding. He/she will see if your insurance covers it but it is a plastic mouth piece that you put in your mouth over your teeth at night that will give you relief and will SAVE your teeth!

You can get a mold done at your dentist to wear at night to save your teeth but if you do it subconsciously I'm not sure there's much you can do about the tension in causes if you're not able to relieve the stress right now. Talk to a doctor, maybe a mild sedative would work to relax you before bed?

You should get a nightguard for nighttime because grinding your teeth could make them smaller, even ruin fillings, or any other restorative work that you've had done on your teeth. During the day you can massage your jaw and do some exercise moving it up and down while massaging. If it gets worse I would see your dentist. You can get the nightguard made for you personally at your dentist. Or you can buy a mouthguard from kmart or a drug store.

Teeth grinding is a habit and often unconcious. Many time it occurs during sleep and is thus unpreventable. We spend at least 1/3 of our life in bed, so this can be a problem in the long term. Mouth guards are available for those who wish to protect their teeth during sleep.

Occasional teeth grinding, medically called bruxism, does not usually cause harm, but when teeth grinding occurs on a regular basis, the teeth can be damaged and other complications can arise, such as jaw muscle discomfort.

I do the same thing, you can get a night-guard at CVS. it's like a mouthpiece that you wear to sleep that prevents you from grinding them to dust.

I wear my hockey mouth guard when I do to sleep. It makes me drool a little more then normal, but it stops me from grinding my teeth, and (according to my boyfriend) has stopped me from snoring as well.
