Crown/capped tooth?!

Question:

Crown/capped tooth?

i have had a front tooth ground down to fit a crown/cap over it and at the minute i am wearing a temporary one.is it normal for it to have a dull ache all the time.the temporary one wasnt fitted very well and there is a gap between the top of the tooth and the gumline.also you can see some glue.is it normal just to leave it looking bad?the dentist told me it isnt a good colour match but the real one will be better and it isnt cosmetically perfect its just to stop the cold getting on the stump while i wait for the final fitting.has anyone else had all this or is he a bad dentist and should i worry?

Answers:

My temporary crowns ached. Temporaries aren't perfect. They're meant to tide you over until the permanant one is placed, not to be perfect. The purpose isn't so much to keep heat and cold (this is just a side effect of having the temporary crown) from getting to it as it's to prevent your gums from healing totally until the permanant crown is placed, because if your gums heal over, it's harder for your dentist to get a good, secure fit on what's left of your tooth as the crown has to go a little way into your gums.

Your gums are still traumatized and your tooth is still traumatized, it's normal for it to ache for a couple of weeks after the permanant crown is placed. Some people ache more, some people ache less. After my permanant crown was placed, my gums settled down and it stopped aching in a matter of a couple of days.

Furthermore, depending on the reason the tooth is being crowned, you may be experiencing discomfort due to that, as well.

Be paitent, you're only half way there.
