Does getting your tooth pulled hurt? And whats the procedure?!

Question: I heard it hurts like hell, I might have to get one of my Canine teeth pulled if it doesn't come out on its own.

Also what do they do that makes it hurt? Wont I get the anastegia thing that makes you numb? So then it wont hurt right?

But my dentist said it'll come out on its own, but just in case...

Depends on the situation. If you are talking about an adult tooth, then pulling it out is difficult to do. If it's a baby tooth, then it's nothing. Adult teeth have roots that go deep into the jaw bone, baby teeth should be pushed out by the adult teeth coming in behind them. Baby teeth have no roots. I suspect if the dentist says it will fall out on it's own, then it's a baby tooth. I've never heard of an adult tooth just falling out unless it was rotten or broken.

For anesthesia they will either give you a local anesthesia or, if your really uptight, they can put you to sleep. They can combine the local anesthesia with nitrous oxide (laughing gas) which will numb the pain, and while you will be awake you won't have a clue whats happening.

To actually pull the tooth, they just grab it with a tool that looks very much like pliers and pull it out. Then they stuff a bunch of cotton in/around the hole to control the bleeding. In some cases they sutcher the hole shut.

It's not really painful during the procedure, but you might be a little uncomfortable for a day or two, then it takes about 2 weeks for the hole to grow closed. No biggie, there are worse medical procedures to go through.

They usually give injections.
it's not so bad, but you have no control over your mouth for a while...

it is not fun. The dentist does numb the area. The thought of it happening is awful. My son had 4 front teeth pulled when he was 7 - I felt so sad for him. It was because the dentist said he would need braces. I still hate that dentist and my son's teeth now age 19 dont look so good as he promised they would.

yes it hurts like hell. They give you drugs, clamp onto your tooth, and rip it out.

seriously thats exactly what they did to me.

The precedure?
Well....
THEY PULL YOUR TOOTH WITH A BIG RENCH!! MWAHAHAHAHAHA...
Joke, joke..
They give you an inection first in your gum, which will numb the area, then you won't feel a thing!

I am a dentist. I have pulled many teeth and none of them ever hurt me. Seriously, if is already very loose and it is pulled, it should not hurt much as they can put a gel on the gums to numb it. If it is not close to coming out, the dentist will numb it with a needle prior to removing it. You will feel some discomfort with the needle, but no pain while pulling it. Don't worry, it most likely will come out on it own. You can try to wiggle it every once in a while to speed it up.

The only part that hurts is getting the shot, and that is just a small pinch. They will give you the shot, then they will let it do its job for about 5 minutes to make sure its numb, then they will poke around to make sure that it is numb. Then, they pull! Its really not that bad.

they numb your mouth and pull it..
but I prefer letting it come out
on its own.. pain free and for free

Just think about it...of course it would hurt but obviously they will give you injections to lessen the pain. I have never been through this but I know several people who got their wisdom teeth removed and with anesthesia, they only felt a bit of pain. It really depends how the anesthesia works on you because it's different with everybody. Hopefully you won't have to go through it though.

If you can handle a small pinch then you can handle this. Its not bad at all. You might have a annoying feeling as the numbing is going away. I learned if you drink something with caffeine in it like a Coke or Pepsi makes that go away faster. My son just had one pulled two days ago. We gave him a soda and some Motrin he was fine within 1/2 hour and didn't say a word the rest of the day. More excited to show everyone his extra tooth. You should be fine. Hope all is well and good luck to you

I think seeing as yours is half out already you don't need to worry too much. Local anaesthetic should be enough.

Had a pre molar out in early teens on local anaesthetic once. Felt strong pressure but no pain (apart from the injections!).

The dentist injected me a few times, waited and then he started tugging with this pliars type tool until it was out really. Didn't last that long.

Gassed other times so can't tell you much except that after it stings a little bit after but not much. Same thing when an injection wears off. Having had bad abcess pain before most times it was a relief to have them out!

Permanent full molars may not be so 'easy.' Don't know as never had one out.

I think it is mainly wisdom teeth that are painful to extract though, partly because of all the nerves and partly because they sometimes have to chisel them out cut the gum etc. The local is often not enough on its own (can wear off as the op is often so prolonged).
