Question:

I hit my tooth(it broke a little bit) and now it hurts when I bite food...?

What happened? Is this like when we bruise and will be healed by itself?Or it is something more serious?

Answers:

When you cause a trauma to a tooth, a few things can happen. If the tooth is jolted by a blow of blunt force it pushes the tooth into the socket causing a bruise to the bone. This can heal, but it takes time. Any pressure would of coarse be painful to the affected area. If enough trauma is done it can cause the tooth to die, or even fracture. If a tooth is dead the tooth will slowly start to discolor, it can turn purple, black, blue or reddish color. This is because the nerve is bleeding inside the tooth. If the tooth is dead, and no treatment is done, then further conditions can occur like an abscess, or cyst. If it is traumatized it may be a bit mobile at first but they typically firm up, however not always. The best thing you can do is go to see your Dentist to make sure there is no fracture in the root from the trauma, and to make sure everything is healing normally. They would require you to have a check up after the initial exam to determine any changes. Usually 1-2 weeks out, and then at your periodic exams they will reevaluate the tooth.
