What are my options?!

Question:

What are my options?

I am wanting to whiten my teeth, but I have a dilemma. When I was little I fell on concrete and chipped off half of my front tooth, so I have a veneer over it right now. If I whiten my teeth all of my teeth will be white and the veneer will not match my other teeth. I was thinking I'd have the veneer taken off, have my teeth whitened, and then have another veneer put on that matches my new white teeth. Does that sound like a good idea or is there something else I should do?

Also, does it hurt having a veneer taken off? I'm not very good when it comes to oral pain haha.

Thanks for any input!

Answers:

You are correct. If you want to whiten your teeth, you should do so first, and then have another veneer made to match the shade when you are done.
I recommend that you have your teeth professionally whitened, so that way you can ensure you reach the desired shade by the quickest means possible. Your desired shade is also more sustainable. After you have a new veneer, you can always "boost" your teeth to a whiter shade by using professional bleaching trays once a month or so. You can always bleach your natural teeth to a whiter shade to match your veneer, but you can never bleach your veneer.
Your dentist will probably not take off your veneer while you are bleaching, he will just replace it when you are done bleaching. If you do not want to wait for the time it takes for at-home bleaching trays (usually two weeks or more to reach your desired shade), and see the visual difference between your teeth and the veneer, you may ask about ZOOM whitening, or any other in-office whitening system that your dentist may have. This usually only takes a couple of hours in the dental office, and your teeth are whitened to your desired shade. (Plus, many offices give you complimentary bleach trays and gel for you to take home to "boost" your shade in the future.)
After your in-office bleaching appointment, your dentist may be able to replace your veneer either that day or they next.
