Answers:

Impressions - they take a mold of your mouth so that they know what kind of braces you will need. They basically have you bite down on a sort of clay for a few seconds - then they take it out. This part might be a little gross (it was for me), but apparently for some people it's not.

Spacers - tiny rubberbands they put in between your teeth to make small spaces - this is so that they can move your teeth into the best possible postion for your braces, and also so that they can fit the metal rings around your back teeth. Not painful, perhaps uncomfortable

Elastics - you might not need these, it depends on how your teeth need to be moved. Basically, you have to hook these small rubberbands from the top of your mouth to the bottom. There's metal hooks on the braces exactly for this purpose. These are pretty annoying since you have to wear them (as intructed by your dentist) if you want your teeth to get straight quickly. So I wouldn't recommend procrastinating if you DO have to wear them, since it'll only hurt you in the long run (don't worry, it won't kill you if you cheat a little though).

I'm not sure what your exact preceedure will be like, since of course all orthodontists are different. But basically, this is what you can expect in general. I remember that at the first appointment they put this thing in my mouth to make it stay open, and they sprayed some stuff to dry out my teeth so that they could glue the braces on (this part is kind of nasty, but it's not too bad). The most uncomfortable part I guess is when they fit the metal rings onto your back molars - then they fit the wire through the brackets. That's really basically it - afterwards your mouth will feel kind of tender and weird, what with all the foreign metal objects poking you. Then, like, every 6 weeks or something, you'll come back for more appointments, where they will tighten your braces (change the size or thickness of the wire). I warn you, it'll hurt all over again after they tighten the braces those first few appointments, but you'll gradually get used to it. I hope everything works out great for you! And you'll have a great smile, so it's worth it! AND BRUSH PROPERLY! You do not want to have yellow teeth once they take the brushes off. I can tell you this from experience >< Good luck =)

P.S. - Braces removal - first they remove the wire. I don't remember which they do first, but they take out both the rings around your back molars, and the brackets. Somehow they pried off the brackets (it was painless) and then they used this drill type thing to get off all the excess glue still stuck to the teeth. Don't worry about the removal part, it's pretty easy!
