Possible root canal?!

Question:

Possible root canal?

Last Monday I was chewing on a piece of gum when my tooth sorta clicked. It's a pretty heavily filled tooth, and as soon as it clicked it hurt so bad. I spent about two days in constant pain before I could see my dentist. By the time I got to see him, the pain had gone but my face was very swollen, as was my gum. He told me I had a major infection, and prescribed me Amoxycillin for five days, which worked wonders. The swelling has gone and it doesn't hurt anymore. Is it possible I broke the filling and it went down into the gum which caused the infection? Will I need x-rays done and a possible root canal?
Sorry for the long post!

Thanks!

Just to let you know...went to see the dentist today, and I do need a root canal. The ony reason why he couldn't tell me there and then was because it was so inflammed he couldn't tell.
Thanks, though.

For the pain to be instant you would have had to have something wrong there in the first place. If it has never bothered you before and is OK again now I doubt there is any need to do a root canal filling. I don't know what the click you heard was but, didn't the dentist explain that? The filling would not have gone into the gum but there was an underlying problem there and when this happened it brought it to your attention. The infection would have happened anyway. Unless you get this problem again I see no need for either an x-ray or root canal. I hope this helps.
