There are several different types of retainers, but they all do basically the same thing; hold your teeth in their new position after you get braces off. There are clear (invisible) retainers, the regular hawley type retainer with the acrylic and wire, permanent wire retainers that go from cuspid to cuspid on the lingual side of your teeth, and there are also modified versions of hawley retainers called spring retainers, which have springs in them to move teeth slightly.
