well it depends on how messed up your teeth were
when I first got them off the orthodontist told me to wear it 24/7 unless eating or brushing for 6 months then after the six months I have to wear them at night for a year and a half
warning the retainer hurts like hell braces are nothing to retainer's I couldn't even talk it hurt so bad for at least two weeks so eat all the good food you can before you get them off
