What should I expect recovery-wise when I get 4 wisdom teeth removed?!

Question: I've done a LOT of research on what to expect during the procedure and how to best care for the area afterwards, but little info on the recovery period.

I'm having 4 teeth taken out in a few weeks and am headed on vacation 6 days later. I figure taking every possible preventative and post-surgery step and implementing LOTS of rest will put me in a good way before I travel, but I'm worried I'll be bruised up and unable to eat anything (I'm going to Baton Rouge and LOVE the local food)!

I have two on top, two on bottom getting removed, one on the bottom is partially impacted and the rest are totally impacted. My x-rays seem to indicate that at least one tooth may be difficult to remove, but the rest should go relatively easily.

What can I do to minimize swelling, maximize healing, and otherwise prepare my mouth for a "restful" vacation? Thanks to all tips from those who work with oral surgeons and those who have been through it themselves :)

this sounds like what I went through with my teeth! I had all four removed 13 days before my wedding. I recomend that immediately after surgery whoever is staying home with you put ice on your face 15 minutes on 15 minutes off (make sure you cover ice with a towel or cloth). Take all your pain killers the first day, and play it by how you feel for the rest of the time- be sure to finish antibiotics!! You will find that eating is very painful because your jaw is sore and your mouth hurts on the inside, so eat jello, pudding, soup, diet drinks (lots of vitamins in slim fast!) and try to sleep sleep sleep. I was swollen for about 3 days, but it was hardly noticeable because i iced the first two days. However I was not able to eat solid food for about two weeks and when I did it was painful and needed to be soft foods. Good luck and trust me it is not as bad as it seems!!

They will tell you everything to do to take care of yourself. You have to take it really easy or could make it take longer to heal. If you follow their rules you should be fine to go off in 6 days! I remember I was only in pain (i had all four removed) for about three days and I was feeling close to normal after!

well it dosn't sound like good news if they r totally impacted....can't u wait for them to grow out??
When i got mine removed my face was sooo swollen like if i had a lolli pop in my mouth and my face turned green/yellow where it took place but i only took two out at a time on the same side. It took about 5 days for swelling to go down completly i think and teh green is still here but basically gone.
On one of my impacted bottom teeth i had to get a suture because it was soo stubborn to remove they had to take it out in pieces and cut the gum or so. OUCH. It gets numbed but u can still feel it some.
Personally the ice on the face on an off wrappe din a a cloth acutaually kind of makes it hurt but drinking cool things seem to work and rinsing with warm salt watever after a day or 2 of surgery but not teh same day! And yes your mouth may smell and taste like blood for at least 4 days and it may be sore to open ur mouth like normal for like 3 days or so.
On an impacted tooth i had that was a bit exposed it wasn't so swollen afterwards, just a lil and it did turn kinda yellow/ green on the face about 2-3 days ltr. The swelling lasted about 3-4 days and it hurt badly worse than the surgery i metioned oddly enough. Hope i gave u some kinda insight etc. Also avoid bending or hunching over liek to pick things up off teh ground etc bcuz it makes one feel light headed!!!!!!!

The younger you are, the easier it is. Most people do not bruise and just have minor swelling. The older you are the worse these symptoms are (40 year olds usually have bruising, etc). 3 days is a must rest, not necessarily b/c of pain, but b/c you won't be able to eat much so you won't feel like doing much. I recommend 5 days to feel up to par to do normal work and activities. Stock up on things that require no chewing and preferrably have high protein amounts. Examples: milk, protein shakes, tomato soup, etc. Sleep and take you meds.
