Are Stitches harmful after oral surgery?!
Question: Are Stitches harmful after oral surgery!?
My brother got his wisdom teeth removed 2 weeks ago and got the stitches removed a few days afterwards however, he just noticed a leftover piece of the stitches in his gums!. Is this harmful!? Should he go back to the dentist to get them removed or will it fall out eventually!?Www@Answer-Health@Com

I'm a dentist!.
He needs to go back to the doctor and have the remaining suture material removed!.
When I extract wisdom teeth, I use resorbable sutures!. Hence, I virtually never remove them!. The patient's immune system does it for me!.
Chances are, if the doctor removed the sutures, he did so because they were non-resorbable and thus had to be removed!.
There is such a thing as a stitch-abscess, i!.e!. an infection that develops around a suture!. Hence, I'd strongly urge your brother to have that last piece removed!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Hi, I'm a dentist!.
Short answer: yes, go back and have the oral surgeon examine the extraction site and remove any remaining suture material!. Some sutures are resorbable (some are made of "gut") and some are not (silk, for example)!. Nonresorbable sutures must be removed!.
You're welcome!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
