Question: Which is a better antibiotic for an abcess in the mouth (tooth)!?
I have seen two different dentist's and been prescribed Clindamycin, and Cephalexin!. I dont want to be taking both anti- biotics!. One of the dentist told me that Clindamycin is really good for oral infection (abcessed teeth) but my other dentist prescribed Cephalexin!. Any one with a medical degree who could answer this!? Answers:
The first drug of choice for a tooth infection is still Penicillin!. After that it is Amoxicillin!. Then Clindamycin is usually considered!. After that, other antibiotics like Keflex (Cephalexin) may be used!.
Some people don't like Clindamycin since one of the adverse reactions is that it can very rarely cause pseudomembranous colitis!. Both these antibiotics can cause diarrhea!.
I have used Amoxicillin and Clindamycin a lot in treating oral infections!. I have never had any problems!. The Cephalosporins are used for bone infections, but they aren't typically first line drugs used by dentists!.
