Is it right if a dentist pulls a tooth even if you're not numb?!

Question: Is it right if a dentist pulls a tooth even if you're not numb!?
I had a root canal in my back tooth (not the wisdom tooth the one before it) about a year ago!. Had a temporary crown put on and it broke off and so did my tooth last week leaving only the roots and such below the gumline!. Yesterday I had to have it pulled and it wouldnt numb!. I had to go through 2 hrs of agony while the dentist cut the tooth up and pulled it out!. Sometimes I begged him to stop screaming and on the verge of vomiting and he didnt stop just continued and we were almost struggling!. I have been sick since and can't get it out of my mind!. Is this right!? He kept getting irritated saying I was the only patient in all his years to feel pain after so many shots!. But it was so bad it was like someone was stabbing me in the nerve of the tooth!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

No dentist on this earth has the right to pull out your tooth before he has explained the procedure to you in its entirity and gained your concent!. It was unprofessional of him to start working at extraction before the local anaesthetic had produced significantly deep anaesthesia!. At this time all that you can feel is touch and pressure sensation only!. There is absolutely no pain!. It was also unprofessional on his part to get irritated on you!. Since you have had procedure like rootcanal treatment done, which is again done under local anaesthetic, it is obvious that local anaesthetic does work for you!. Local anaesthetics may not work to the best if they have been injected some distance away from nerves, or if the patient is alcoholic or abuses drugs!. For the present, since the procedure was carried out very recently, please take the following precautions:
1- All your mecicines on time please,
2- Take cold water in your mouth wait for a few seconds and gulp it!. you can also have icecremes if u r not diabetic!.
3- Apply ice pack from outside!.
4- Sleep with an extra pillow
5- Smile a lot!. It helps!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

I would take him to court!. Just because he is doing his job doesnt give him the right to behave this way when your obviously in pain!. I would say it was assault, even torture, definetly malpractiseWww@Answer-Health@Com

Yeah my mum had the same problem - she switched to a private dentist!. It doesnt matter how many shots you had if you were saying it wasnt numb he shouldnt have continued!. I would report him!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

I hear more horror stories about ignorant pompous dentists who think that they are 'Gods Gift'!. It's about time this lax government sorted them out and seriously start to reduce the ridiculous cost of dental treatment, it has become out of reach for most working people!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

The dentist was faced with 2 choices: either give up completely (you probably had the maximum amount of local anesthetic), or continued and take out the root!. Neither of it would have satisfied you!. You are very unhappy that he went ahead!. But had he given up, you would have been dis-satisfied as well because you would still have the root in there and had the anesthetic in vain!. Try and look on the bright side (the problem root is gone) and when the wound heals the tooth will not trouble you again!. Maybe you should have had a general, but it's too late now!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

That's terrible service - he shouldn't have continued if you were in pain!. Sounds like he didn't get the injection into the nerve properly!. Normally an operation of that apparent length would be carried out in hospital, if necessary under general anaesthetic!. You certainly should complain!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

No way should he have continued -he should have sent you to emergency dentist at hospital!. If an injection doesn't take effect after 5-6 minutes you can have another shot but if that one doesn't work then he should not have continued!.
Definitely change dentist but i would also report him to local health authorities - he might already have complaints against
him before !.Www@Answer-Health@Com

This doesn't sound right!. I know that they can only give so many injections!. If you were in so much pain he should have stopped, if that was possible, and arranged for you to go to hospital and have the tooth removed by gas!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Jodi Lynn,

This is not acceptable!. I have had the same issue as far as not getting numb, I had 5 shot of local and still felt pain!. My tooth was severely infected (abscess) under the root , the dentist immediately referred me to an oral surgeon which put me to sleep!. This is mal practice, and this dentist needs to be reported!. I work for a dental insurance company, and if we get any complaints like that it is serious business!. You need to contact the State Board, and an attorney!. And the dentist should have known better than to try and extract while you were still feeling the pain!. You probably had a deep infection, and by him just cutting it open and pulling the tooth without giving you at least a week of antibiotics first , he allowed the infection into your blood stream!. You may feel nausea's for a couple days, but then you should be fine as far as the sickness goes!. But please do not let this go - If you don't say anything, he will do it to someone else!. The mouth is very fragile, and these dentist get paid a lot of money for a reason, they are supposed to be gentle, and do things correctly!. Hope this helps you, you can contact me with any further questions you have!. I am not a dentist, but being in the dental field I know A LOT!.

An absess on the root could have stopped the injections from working and a course of antibiotics to reduce the infection would probably have remedied this problem!.

The dentist was very unprofessional to have continued with the extraction under the circustances, that is hat analgesia is for!. Change dentist!Www@Answer-Health@Com
