I guess my question is!.!.!.what exactly is a root canal and what do they do!? Can they knock me out for this!? I plan on calling my dentist to find all of this out, I just couldnt ask yesterday because I was so upset!. I just wanted to know everyone's experience with a root canal!. Ok, I am a dental assistant so I've assisted thru the entire procedure!. You can get put to sleep for the procedure but, it costs buco bucks!. The dentist will numb you up really good so you will not feel anything!. Basically the dentist just uses several instruments to clean out the canals in your tooth!. There is some drilling involved but nothing to worry about!. Once the canals are cleaned the dentist will clean them out with some bleach!. The tooth will be temporarily filled with some cavit (a mushy material)!. After the procedure is finished you will go back to your dentist so he can build the tooth up and prepare it for a crown!. As far as waiting!.!.!. you can wait as long as you can stand the pain!. The problem is, is that the tooth probably broke because you had some decay there!.!.!. so if you wait too long the tooth may not be able to be saved by a root canal and crown!. You may have to get it pulled!. Good Luck!!Www@Answer-Health@Com

Well, root canals are not the best thing you can have done at the dentist!.!.!.they can be painful, but you can get nitrous oxide to help relax you!.!.!.breath deep when they give it to you - it'll work faster that way!! Sometimes, depending on the dentist, you may have to go through several visits to complete it!. The first one, they will drill out the root and fill it and give you a temporary crown on your tooth until the new one can be made!. Newer dentists have the technology right in their offices to make a crown while you wait, therefore eliminating multiple visits!.

Hopefully, all will go well and you will be fine!. I also take care of my teeth, brush twice a day, floss, mouthwash, and I have had to 3 root canals in my life!. I too am terrified of the dentist!.!.!.my hands hurt more from squeezing them so tightly on the arms of the chair!! Good luck to you!.!.!.get the nitrous and breath deep!!!Www@Answer-Health@Com

A root canal is a lengthy process in which they drill down through the existing tooth into the root, hollow it out and fill it in!. Ideally, dentists prefer to keep tooth roots in place whenever possible (and the teeth, too)!. They'll then fill in the hole they make!. I am over-simplifying this, but that's the basic!. I had to have a crown also, and for this, they filed down the existing molar to create a platform--after taking a mold of the original tooth--made a temporary tooth and used dental adhesive to "glue" the temporary molar crown to the platform of the original tooth!. A couple weeks later when the permanent crown was finished being made, I went back in, had the temporary pried off, and the permanent crown glued on!. Not all root canals require crowns, but I thought I'd include it!. There are dentists who advertise "gentle dentistry" and basically this means they put you out with gas while they work!. You may or may not be consciously aware of what's going on!. The drawback is that insurance rarely pays for this type of anesthesia because it's rarely necessary!. I find it well worth it, though!. I have a friend or relative go with me, to sit in the room, though because I'm paranoid about being out of it and unable to protect myself!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

In a root canal they drill out the nerve & fill in the hole!.

Of course they numb the area first!.!.

I have had several root canals done & lived to tell the tale!.

It would be best to get it done because a bad tooth can cause more trouble to your sustem than just the pain you feel!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

1!. Get a second opinion

A root canal is very serious and painful procedure!. So many dentists are so quick to say you need a root canal, when your problem could probably be fixed another way!. Someone very close to me had their dentist say those same things, and they got a second opinion and found out he was full of it!.

2!. IF you do need one, they can knock you out but make sure you ask lots of questions and get some good drugs when your done!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

The other users descriptions are accurate and process doesn't sound pretty, but apart from the numbing in the beginning you don't feel a thing!. So don't worry about it!.

GET IT DONE NOW otherwise the infection (the pain you are feeling) will make your face swell horribly for a few days and if the infection spreads to the jaw you may later need an apicoectomy (I had one a year after initial root canal, that wasn't pleasant)!.

As for how long can you wait!? It varies!. Some of mine were done preemptively due to exposed nerves in shattered teeth and one was done after a tooth they thought could be saved started to hurt and die months later!. The one that died later I was considering taking it out on my own to stop the pain (it was over the weekend)!.

See if your dentist does Carecredit if you can't afford it now!. It is a medical credit card and they will give you 0% for whatever period (6 - 18 months) the dentist is setup with them for!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

In order to cut down on your costs, you can google Dentistry schools in your area!. They cost soooo much less than regular dentists!. Also, some dentists serve poorer sections of society and would be able to give you a discount!. Get to googling!.!.!.!. good luck!. Another thing I learned the hard way, prevention is better than cute!. I would gladly spend $100 yearly cleaning my teeth to preemptively stop any cavities than all the stuff I've had to go through since!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

The root canal treatment is NOT supposed to be a painful procedure, if done properly and in time!.

Most endodontic procedures need only minimal anesthesia!. If the nerve of the tooth is already dead, the patient may need no anesthesia at all!.

Do you know why so many people are saying that it is painful!? Because they had heard similar stories of terror about it, they got afraid and postponed it until they ended up with a serious and extremely painful tooth abscess!.

If you give the time to the tooth infection to spread, then it is true that the treatment will be painful!. The anesthesia has decreased effectiveness on inflamed tissues!.

In general, the chance of experiencing pain during or after root canal increases as stronger was the pain that somebody had before going to the dentist!.

Otherwise, if you proceed to the treatment after the first signs of problem, root canal treatment can be a painless procedure!.

Waiting until the pain becomes unbearable is the worst thing you can do!. And finally, if you can afford the higher cost prefer a specialized endodontist!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
