Servere mouth pain. just got braces. PLEASE HELP?!

Question: Servere mouth pain!. just got braces!. PLEASE HELP!?
I got braces yesterday on my top and bottom teeth!. I also have the Herbst appliance in to help with the overbite!.
I can't eat any type of solid because my back teeth dont tough eachother and I cant just swallow!.
I have a blister the size of grape on the right side of my mouth rubbing against the herbst appliance!.
My teeth are sore and even drinking and spitting as agonizing!.
I'm in high school and all my friends who have/have had braces say it hurts at first but their pain was not as bad as mine!.
I've been communicating w/ my mom through this computer!.

Thanks so much!. I appreciate it!.

Hang in there Jake!. I think dental pain is some of the toughest to deal with!. The discomfort will go away!. The first few days are honestly the toughest you'll have to deal with!. Will your teeth ache after other appointments!? Possibly, everyone's different with their tolerance to discomfort, but it will get easier and easier with each time!.

Ah the Herbst!. Effective but very tough on the inside of your cheeks!. Rinse with warm salt water as many times a day as you can stand the taste!. It will help soothe the sting from all the friction of those rods from that appliance!.

Use the wax your ortho gave you wherever you have a sore spot!. Put the wax on whatever piece of bracework is causing the sore!. It's a temporary thing, but it will give you a break for a bit!. You may accidentally swallow the wax!. No worries, it won't harm your system!. Keep this in mind tho' - don't use the wax to prevent the sores!. You have to toughen up the tissue or you'll always have troubles!. Kind of like the blister on your heel with the new pair of shoes & that heel eventually callouses!.

If your folks are OK with you taking tylenol or advil for the next couple of days, it will at least take the edge off for you!. And a softer diet is the best right now!. You'll learn to eat with the Herbst - I promise!. Live on yogurt, ice cream, smoothies, oatmeal - basically anything you can put in your mouth and swallow if that's what it takes to stay fed!.

Jake, something I want you to be VERY careful about with that Herbst is your hygiene!. I worked in ortho for a long time, and I saw a number of patients end up with serious inflamation/puffy/painful gums on the lower because of poor hygiene - this is really really important!. You know where the rod connects on the lower!? That 'arm' the rod screws into!? Keep it very clean!. Brush after each time you eat, spending 3-4 minutes every time!. Use the proxybrush they gave you!. Did you get a proxybrush!? It kind of looks like a little Christmas tree on a stick!? That thing is excellent for getting under that 'arm' and loosening plaque - use it every day at least once!. If you didn't get one from your ortho you can find it at just about any store that sells health & beauty supplies (Target, grocery stores, etc)!. Consider rinsing with an antiseptic mouthrinse (like Listerine) a couple of times a day and using fluoride at night before bed!. The fluoride should be the last thing that touches your teeth before your head hits your pillow!.

Good luck Jake, keep your chin up!. These next couple of years will be a blip in the grand scheme of your life!. Take care of things and you'll end up with a gorgeous smile, a healthy bite and more confidence than you can even imagine!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

i know how it feels i got braces less than a month ago and they hurt like hell i would say take tylenol it helped me a lot and eat soup and all those soft foods goodluck hope i helped=] and besides even if it hurt the pain wont last forever think of it that way its a couple days and they will pass by before u know it and think of how its worht the pain after wards u have a great smile =]Www@Answer-Health@Com

For the blister from rubbing against the Herbst appliance, get some dental wax and push a chunk (nicely balled up) over the part that is rubbing!. And I second using tylenol, advil or motrin for the pain!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

yeah it really does hurt because the pressure when you first get braces is really bad on your front teeth especially

but after a while it stops, it will probably be several days though

the blister is because of the rubbing of the brackets on your cheek, if your not careful it will get worse and take a long time to heal because the brackets will keep tearing it open again!. your orthodontist may have given you wax to put on the brackets to prevent that or to lessen the blistering until your cheeks eventually "toughen" and it becomes less of a problem, if not you can buy it at wal-mart of a drugstore in the oral health section

also when you get your braces "tightened" it will hurt for a day or two as well, it is because they will have swapped the wire you had with a thicker one to heighten the pressure on your teeth so straighten them further!. also when you get "power chains" it will be very painful, they are bands that are all connected in one long "chain" they are to prevent or fix gaps in your teeth that may have been a result of the braces, but dont worry the pain will subside from that too after a few days when you are more used to it!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

My son has had his braces for a year and it still hurts when he gets any adjustments!. I usually give him one or two tylenol extra strengths and he says it does the trick!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
