Stainless steel crowns on a 5 year old???!

Question: Stainless steel crowns on a 5 year old!?!?!?
I was told by our dentist that my son (5) needs 3 pulpotomies and 3 ss crowns on molars!. When getting a second opinion, I found that if you crown a baby molar, it might have to be extracted when it starts to fall out!. The crown sits so firmly on the tooth that it cant be pushed out by the adult tooth coming in!. I know he has decay in the tooth, I can see it!. Not to mention, he will be sedated!. Has anyone heard of NOT crowing baby molars becasue of the results described above!. I do understand the need to have something done, for fear ruining his perment teeth but I'm on the fence with what to do!. Anyone else have a similar situation!?Www@Answer-Health@Com

This is the trouble with this forum!.!.!.!.lots of people on here who know nothing but aren't afraid to guess or disseminate wrong info!. Your son isn't going to lose those teeth for probably 6 years or more!. The ss crowns have nothing to do with whether the deciduous teeth will exfoliate or not!. This has more to do with the pulpotomies!. Even then, it's not a big deal to remove the baby tooth as the roots do resorb!. You need to go ahead with what your doctor suggests as if your son loses those teeth now or in the near future it's going to create problems with the permanent teeth!. The baby teeth need to hold spaces for the permanent ones!. Good luck!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

I think you should have thought about this before you let his teeth get into this kinda shape!.

Your best bet is the get a second opinion from another dentist whose a little more specialized in dealing with a youth practice as he will know more about long term effects!.

IF you do do it (as you should) your dentist will have to keep regular XRays on that area to see when the perm tooth is coming in and at that point hed set up a time to pull the baby tooth (with crown of course)!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

I have to agree with the above comments!. Come on now, this doesnt just happen overnight!. Take a little responsibility for letting this happen!. Also, a child does NOT need this kind of dental work!. Have him extract the back teeth!. They can't be seen, and will fall out soon anyway!. Any remaining teeth need to be treated wtih flouride and sealant to prevent future decay!. CUT DOWN ON THE SWEETS!Www@Answer-Health@Com

not to be rude, but all i can think is!.!.!.!."why does a 5 year old have such bad dental hygiene!?!?"Www@Answer-Health@Com

Okay, rude people give it a rest!. Some kids just have weak enamel and are prone to cavities no matter what they do!. I had four SS crowns when I was a kid!. My permanent teeth underneath came in just fine!. I've never heard of crowns effecting the eruption of the permanent teeth!. Make sure before you spend all the money on this that he's not going to lose the teeth in a few months!. If he is, see if your dentist can just patch/bond the pulpotomies instead of crowning them!. Pulpotomies are like mini root canals for baby teeth, without them your child may be in a lot of pain, I'm not sure of your situation!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

I was just told the same thing about my daughter!. Believe me, I spend 10 minutes every night brushing her teeth!. We don't floss them but I don't know many people who do floss their kids teeth (if they do they are in the minority)!. She only drinks water, milk, and chocolate milk (at night and I brush her teeth after) and she is not a sweets eater!. I just don't understand and I feel just lousy about it!!! But I am in the process if getting a second opinion because I just don't believe or trust the dentist!. Her teeth do not hurt and I see no evidence of decay (except on one tooth)!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

What are your other options!? Leaving infected baby teeth can cause damage to the permanent teeth that are sitting directly underneath the primary teeth!. Prematurely extracting baby teeth can cause a problem with spacing of the permenant teeth since the baby teeth are what holds the space for the adult teeth!. And extracting 3 teeth will hamper your child's ability to eat well!. Is it that you don't want your child to have silver crowns!? Don't let that affect your child's permanent dentition!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
