Dentistry: Dry socket? The fate of stitches with implants?!

Question: Dentistry: Dry socket!? The fate of stitches with implants!?
I had a tooth extraction and titanium implant (with bone graft) last 6 days ago!. The healing seemed to be going well until the last couple of days, when "eating" (I mean, spooning applesauce, yogurt, etc!. into my mouth) began to cause pain at the site!. There has also been a more or less constant throbbing which is not exactly painful--just present!. Is either of these--the eating pain or the background throbbing-- a sign of a dry socket!?

Also: I know that stitches don't always need to be taken out!. Is this because they dissolve or because they detach themselves!? Mine have begun to detach, so there are loose bits of string in my mouth!.

I'd be really grateful if there are any hygeinists/ dentists out there who can let me know whether to be concerned!Www@Answer-Health@Com

The sutures are made of material meant to be absorbed by the body!. Given time, the liquid in the cells breaks them down and they just get carried off or absorbed!. Since the mouth is a rather wet place, the stitches usually tend to break up before the body has a chance to really break them down!. And in some cases, you body treats them like a splinter and tosses them out!. If the bits bug you, the dentist can snip them off- don't go pulling on them though!. The cause of your pain could be several things!. I doubt at this point it's a dry socket, especially since the extraction sites were sutured!. A dry socket happens at the bone level, where a hole in the bone was left when the tooth was removed!. The bone's blood supply creates a clot to seal off the hole, and if that clot is lost, the bone dehydrates!. Being sutured pretty much takes care of that as a risk!. More than likely what you have is healing pain, because you had the implant and bone graft done!. That area has to heal, and the nerves which were disturbed do often squawk as they come back to life and repair!. Moving the jaw does tend to aggrivate them more, so you have more pain when you eat or talk!. At this point, you might get relief from taking something like Motrin- which helps with inflammation and pain, and putting some mild heat on the face alongside the ache!. Drinking a warm drink and letting it pool on the sore side cheek pocket can help as well, getting the heat a bit closer to the spot fussing!. The warm drink will also help hasten the breakdown of the suture bits as well, so it may solve two irritations at once for you!. And if you still feel concern, by all means call the dentist and arrange to be looked at!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Hi Mae,

I've gone through a full mouth reconstruction!.

If you have stitches, it's unlikely that you get a dry socket because stitches makes it harder for the clot to get dislodged!.

This being said, the throbbing pain one feels when they get implants is the same that is felt when a bone is broken and it gets ossified back (which in fact it is what happens!!!)!.

Mine lasted around 6-8 weeks (different in different sites)!.

The eating pain is normal because your gums need 4-5 weeks to heal!.

Just go to your dentist to get checked just in case, otherwise don't worry!

Good luck!Www@Answer-Health@Com
