Is this medication right for a toothache?!

Question: Is this medication right for a toothache!?
I have a very painful toothache but I can't get to a dentist until early next week!.

I went to a urgent care medical clinic yesterday and asked the doctor for something for the pain until I can see a dentist!.

The doctor prescribed me some cephalexin 500mg (antibiotic) and ibuprofen 800mg!. I asked for something stronger for pain!.

The doctor told me that the antibiotic will work better for pain than any pain reliever like Vicodin because it will kill the infection causing the pain!. The doctor said it would work almost immediately!.

My tooth is still killing me!. I took a bunch of the ibuprofen and two doses of the antibiotic!. Will the antibiotic kick in soon and relieve the pain!? I don't want to look like a drug addict and bug the doctor later asking for some Vicodin!.

What should I do!?Www@Answer-Health@Com

Answers:
Yes, this is right!. Once the antibiotics get going you won't have anymore pain!. The ibuprofen should work the best b/c it is such a good antiinflammatory!. You can alternate extra stregth tylenol between the ibuprofen for more help!. The antibiotics DO help with pain!. Teeth actually do NOT have pain receptors!. The pain comes from the pressure that builds from the infection building up around your tooth!. Once, the infection goes down, you will feel much better!. If it is horrible you can even double up the antibiotics and take 2 pills 3 times a day instead of 1, but you should check with your doc or dentist first to be sure!. For bad infections, we often have people double up the antibiotics the first few days until it feels much better!. Also, Cephalexin IS recommended for tooth infections!. It often works much better on teeth bugs than Amoxicillin!. This is what we normally prescribe!. We do normally prescribe 500mg tabs 1, (3) times a day!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

First of all, the urgent care doctor knows very little about teeth!. Did he take an x-ray of the tooth and diagnose the problem!? Cephalexin is not recommended for a tooth infection and it will not alleviate the pain, a better choice would be amoxicillan or clindamycin if you can take them!. If the ibuprofen is not helping, you need something stronger such as vicodin!. The vicodin may buy you some time, but it sounds like the tooth needs a root canal or extraction!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

anti biotics do not relieve the pain, it kills the bacteria!. The pain killer stops the pain but if too much abscess, the pain killer too might not work!. You need to drain the abscess in the tooth that is causing the compression of the nerve!. Try taking tremadol with paracetamol!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
