Question: Can I get Braces if I have TMJ!?
I do not have jaw pain!. I just can't open my mouth real wide!. I wanted braces because my teeth were crooked!. I asked my
dentist and he said he don't think he can fit the braces in my
mouth!. Then I went to an orthodontist he said I could not get braces because I wasn't opening my mouth wide enough and it
couldn't fit!. I was so sad and disappointed!. Is it really true I can

My dentists told me this to but I decided to get braces and now i have perfectly straiht teeth, don't get me wrong it was very painful and they had to put a device in my mouth to keep it open and make sure that my mouth was open wide enough!. My tmj is more severe than yours(it sounds like) cause i had pain and my jaw pops!. If they could get them on me i'm pretty sure you will be able to get themWww@Answer-Health@Com
I had a friend that was not able to get braces because he had TMJ as well!. He was SOOO bummed! Just on a whim, he went to another orthodontist - and she had suggested Invisalign!. I don't know if you heard about this - but it's a series of alignment - CLEAR mouth pieces that you wear over time!. They will cure almost any tooth related issues (crooked, over-bite, under-bite, etc!.) that braces can!. Because my friend was not able to open his mout all of the way - this was the ONLY solution that was available to him!. His original doctor said that he could perform oral surgery that could correct the TMJ - but it would be at least a year after before he could get braces!!! His new orthodontist had him in Invisalign within a week! He is on the last stage now and I can only tell you that the change in his smile was RADICAL!. He had his teeth whitened about a month ago as well - WOW!!!!

But even if it says that there are no providers in your area - call around to all of the DDS's in your area to see if they can fit you with Invisalign - it works! I've seen it with my own eyes! As one last point - my friend had crowding of his teeth also which contributed to some of the pain that was associated with his TMJ (his back teeth were a mess) - and the Invisalign has actually taken his pain away!
