Well I had one appointment, and they told me to get teeth pulled!. So I did, came back, and got spacers and molds, and now I'm going back on May 15th to get braces!. It will be a total of 4 weeks since I started when I get my braces!.
But it really depends on the person!. If you have no baby teeth, have already spaced out teeth, and you have no need for other appliances, then you should have one or two appointments before the braces go on!. However, it's when you schedule an appointment, that decides how many weeks the process will be!. I scheduled mine for next week, but I could have done this week, and it had nothing to do with my teeth, just my time!. So if you wan them fast, schedule an appointment for as soon as possible!.
The best color is usually pick for girls, blue for boys!.

I would recommend not getting white, black, green, clear or silver, because they stain easily and will make the food more noticeable, and green makes it look like food is stuck in your teeth!.
