Was the root canal done by your regular dentist, a general practitioner, or by a specialist, an Endodontist!? If it was done by your GP, I would consider having an Endodontist look at your tooth!. Endodontists are specialists who only do root canals, all day, every day!. I am always amazed at some of the things they can do that I as a general dentist can't!.
If it is hurting already, and if you can't have a specialist look at it then you are probably going to have it extracted!.
You would only crown the tooth if it was not giving you any problems and you wanted to give the tooth some strength to withstand the forces of your bite!.

Update: Having one tooth removed does not make you face look sucked in!. Your ridge will develop a bony defect but that is usually not a huge problem for a bridge!. You would want bone added to the extraction site if you were getting an implant to replace the tooth!.
By general practitioner I mean "dentist"!. There are dentists and then there are specialists!. Specialists are Endodontists, Orthodontists, Oral Surgeons, Pedodontists, Prosthodontists, and Periodontists for example!. All the rest are just dentists!.
If your root canal was done by a dentist, as I said before, I would want an Endodontist to have a look if it was my tooth, before I went and had the tooth removed!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
