Painful Abscess ?!

Question: Painful Abscess !?
Hi,
My husband is terrified of the dentist, we are talking real phobia here, he'd rather die than go to a dentist, and he has a huge abscess on one of his upper left molars !
Is there any way that he can ease the pain !? What's the best painkiller for an abscess !?
Any help or advice will be greatly appreciated!.
Many thanks in advance :)Www@Answer-Health@Com

You said he would rather die than go!.!.!.!.!.but he could be seriously ill if he *doesn't* go to the dentist!. Abcesses so near to the sinus and brain can cause all sorts of problems, brain abcess, jaw bone abcess!.!.!.then he will have far more to fear and worry about than half an hour in the dentist chair!.

It will not clear up by itself!. He needs to be on antibiotics, which will kill the pain in about a day or so!. He could get these from a doctor, but he will be told to go to the dentist as soon as possible!.

Cold water swilled round the mouth is the only temporary relief for abcess pain!. Make sure he spits it out, not swallows (as there have been cases of people getting health problems from drinking too much water to get rid of the pain of abcesses!.) He can safely take two 500mg paracetamol, and one 400mg ibuprofen, all together, three/four times a day!.

My advice would be to get him to a dentist that does IV sedation!. He will be completely out for the procedure and will not remember a thing - they use midazolam which is a hypnotic and effects the memory!. He can also have his other teeth checked while he is under!. They will probably take it out, but may root canal/crown it!.

If your financial situation precludes this, go to your own dentist explain the situation and ask for valium tablets for him before the appointment!. Not as good as IV, but take the edge off!. Or go to your local NHS dentist as an emergency, they will pull it in ten seconds for about thirteen quid!.!.!.he won't even know what happened!. But he needs to get on antibiotics and get it it seen!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

he will unfortunately have to go to the dentist as he will need antibiotics, till then tho take paramol which is the strongest OTC painkiller 2 every 4 hours also in between take ibuprofen 200mg 2 every 6 hours, following the maximum dosages on the box, this is the most pain relief u can get without prescription!.
have u told the dentist how scared he is!? maybe they can give a sedative for him to take, my daughter was like this but thanks to a really wonderful (NHS) dentist she will now let them do anything shes had root canals the lot without problem she used to be crying and shaking before she went in andheld my hand tight now she will go by herself without a problem!. good luck!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

I can understand the fear of going to a dentist!. You have to be brave to open your mouth and let a stranger poke things in your mouth!. But believe me, if the abscess is as big as you had described it has to be drained (let the pus out from the abscess) before any other treatment can be affective!. Your hubby will be put on antibiotics and pain killer after draining out the pus!. Then!.!.!.he'll be as happy as can be, no more throbbing pain and no more bad moods!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

A lot of people have a fear of the dentist due to past experiences!. However with modern dentistry it is sooo pain free, with very minimal discomfort!.
An abcess is an infection!.!.!.!.If your husband had an abcess or an infection on his leg, would he go to the doctor!?!? OF COURSE!.!.!.same thing with your teeth, go to the dentist!.
An abcess in the mouth can spread to other areas of his body and the infection can spread!.

Go to a dentist that your friends or family recommend and I assure you, he will be a lot happier after going to the dentist and getting the appropriate treatmentWww@Answer-Health@Com

A good dentist will not touch his teeth whilst he has an abscess!. He needs to go to doctor straight away for antibiotics!. When he goes to the dentist he can get gas but it is expensive as a doctor has to be in attendance!. His doctor could get his teeth done at hospital!. I was terrified the same as your husband but explained my fear to dentist and she understood my fears!. I am not to bothered about going now, only the cost!. I was a bit put out when I found my dentists name was Mrs SAVAGEWww@Answer-Health@Com

Hi,

I had an abscess and hated doctors!. It got so bad I was admitted into hospital with morphine!. He has to go to the dentist - straight away!. There is no way to ease the pain - ibuprofen did not help!. Drinking cold milk eased in the very short term, also a tooth ache gel from Tesco that contained clove oil was OK but did not shift it!
Tell him to go - it will be so much better if he does!.
Good luck - AnnaWww@Answer-Health@Com
