Is she very sensitive!? I had a horrible experience as a kid and it scarred me for life!. I now have a terrible phobia of the dentist and have to have sedation for treatment nowadays!. There is just something so invasive about opening your mouth to someone with a drill or a pick!.!.!.if she had pain in the past, she is unlikely to forget it!. Even if it was just that darned pick thing on her teeth!. Don't coerce her with promises that it won't ever hurt again!. Sometimes dental treatment *is* uncomfortable - even the injections hurt a tiny bit don't they!? If she goes and it hurts again even a tiny bit she might have a problem trusting you!. I know I went through this with my own parents!.

Try explaining to her about how tooth decay happens, and how it causes pain in the teeth!. Show her how to take care of her teeth properly so she need never go through pain again!. She has not got her adult teeth yet, so when they come in, if she looks after them properly she will probably never need invasive treatment!. My son is 18 and has not got a single filling!. Probably due to my phobia!.!.he loves the dentist, because I stood over him with a toothbrush from the first eruption until he shut the bathroom door in my face aged 14!.

Phone the dentist and ask for their advice!. Take her into the office, let her look around but not sit in the chair!. Limit her sugar and fizzy drink intake!. Learn about tooth health yourself!.

I wish I could help more, but this is something if not nipped in the bud could cause serious problems in later life!.

Best advice you can give a child - look after your teeth!!!Www@Answer-Health@Com

Call the dentist in advance and ask if you can go in with her!. My kids go to a pediatric dentist and they give them the small handheld video games to play or a tape player they can listen to while the dentist is working on them!. I think it helps them relax!. You can ask if she can bring something like that if they don't have it!.

You may also want to schedule an appointment for yourself and let her go to see that it's not always a bad experience!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Reassure her the first apppointment would be a checkup and a cleaning!. Nitrous is an option for her cleaning!. Absolutely no restorative work should be attempted!. Let the dentist know about her fears!. Nitrous and oral sedation should be administer for any dental procedure even for cleaning!. Talk to her about preventative and possible a toothache which is very painful if she does not get her teeth check up!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Hi,

Some ways to abate your child's fear: 1> Schedule her first dental visit when she is not experiencing pain yet!. This way, her first visit will be a pleasant one and memorable too, if the dentist is very friendly with children!.

2!.> Tell her wonderful and positive things about going to the dentist, not scary ones!. Give her a reason to like going to the dentist, even if it will be her first!.

3!.> Ask around for feedback on which dentist handles kids well!. Some dentists aren't very "patient" with their child patients, so do your research before you go to someone and regret later on!.

Good luck !!!Www@Answer-Health@Com
