What can I do about my wisdom teeth?!

Question: What can I do about my wisdom teeth!?
I have been reccomended by the dentist every time I go to get my wisdom teeth pulled!. The top ones are fine, and the bottom ones are erupted, but not all the way!. I see why I should get those pulled, but I have an extra problem!.

Bad teeth runs in my family!. It seems no matter how hard I brush, floss, and rinse, I have a new cavity every time I go to the dentist!. (especially when I was in junior high and high school, when I was too young to realize to take my teeth seriously!) My 12-year molars (the next-biggest molars in front of the wisdom teeth) are chipped, and have had more fillings than I can count!.

Is it possible for the dentist to get rid of those nasty teeth and let my wisdom teeth, which are clean, natural, and cavity-free, replace them!? I really don't like the idea of getting rid of 4 healthy teeth when I have 4 rotten teeth that will likely have to go in the future anyway!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Answers:
You have a common problem and common suggestion!. Unfortunately, if you remove the 12 year molars, your wisdom teeth will not necessarily erupt into their place!. They will likely erupt (the lower ones at least), but will not move horizontally into the place of the ones that were extracted!. Even with braces, that is a LONG way to move teeth!. And if they come in crooked, it is very likely that they will be difficult to clean, and thus will get decay themselves!.

If you do get cavities despite brushing and flossing, you might want to ask your dentist about maybe trying a chlorhexidine mouth rinse!. This is an antibacterial rinse that decreases the amount of bacteria in your mouth that causes cavities!.

You can also try chewing gum with the sugar substitute, xylitol (Kool Aid Koolers are one, but there are several)!. Xylitol has been shown to also help decrease the cavity causing bacteria in your mouth!.

Also, do you drink a lot of sodas, coffee, juice, or snack a lot (on pretty much anything)!? Almost anything besides water that you put in your mouth will contain sugar, and if you snack or nurse on beverages throughout the day, that will increase your risk of cavities!.

Probably more information than you wanted, but hope some of it helps!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
