Advice on chipped front tooth repairs?!

Question: Advice on chipped front tooth repairs!?
I chipped the corner of my front tooth when I was 9, & had a veneer sorta thing fitted to look as if I still had the full tooth!.

It lasted 12 years, falling off last year!. I paid for a 2nd one, which only lasted 9 months!. I then got a 3rd, which lasted 6 weeks! They say it's not covered by guarantee!.

Every time I have it repaired, they sand part of my tooth away to fit it!. I'm worried that if this keeps happening I'll end up with no real tooth at all!. It's not that I'm that vain I need to have it; I just want to have it looking nice for my wedding in 2009, so I plan to get it done once more, and if it breaks off, so be it!.

But why did the first one last 12 years, through my growing up (eating loads of junk foods) and the 2nd and 3rd hardly last at all (when I eat well, with hardly any stress on my teeth)!?

It costs me
Answers:
What you have had placed previously has been a composite bonded veneer!. The dentist should offer some type of guarantee on his work if this keeps falling off!. It obviously has some sort of bonding failure, moisture contamination most likely!. Or it's possible that when you eat, you are torquing your tooth too much causing this bonding to break its bonding seal and fall off!. There is no way of knowing for sure who is at fault, but most dentists will re-do their work if it fails within a year!. Talk to your dentist, if he isn't willing to re-do his work, see if he will discount crown work by what you've paid already or find a new dentist!. I would suggest that you see about having a "porcelain veneer" (which may hold but you will have to be very cautious with) or a full porcelain crown placed!. The full porcelain crown will look, feel and work as a natural tooth without the risk of falling off, but you must still use caution when biting into hard foods and avoid bumping the tooth with a glass or bottle which could cause it to fracture!. The full porcelain crown is the most stable of the three!.

Additional information:
What the dentist is taking off is the bonding and adhesive that must be removed in order for a new bonding to work!. So, it seems like a lot of tooth structure is being removed, when it is really just a miniscule amount!.

The first one lasted 12 years because it was placed on a newly prepped clean tooth, and it was done well and done correctly!.

It's not vanity to want a front tooth; even men are particular about theirs!. I will tell you that leaving this chipped area uncovered for any length of time is inviting decay, since it's missing some or most of the facial enamel, which is the tooth's protective covering!. Take care of it as soon as possible!.

The price of crowns and veneers are very close, usually $700!.00 and up, depending upon the dentist and their location!. Prices can vary greatly so be sure to ask in advance!. Naturally the composite veneer is less expensive than these, making it a more affordable choice!. Once you see the difference in a full porcelain crown or a veneer, you will wonder why you didn't get one sooner!. They are more life like since they allow light to transfer through the porcelain and tooth just as the natural enamel does, they do not stain and feel much smoother than the composite!. I still say that the crown is the better choice of the two!. A great number of patients have trouble keeping a veneer on the tooth or fracture them easily!. I'm a big porcelain crown fan!.

I hope I've answered your questions and if you still need to discuss anything, just send an email!. I'll be happy to help any way that I can!. I think you were trying to direct me back to this question, weren't you!?Www@Answer-Health@Com

You could ask your dentist to use a strip crown instead!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

When you go and see any dentist, you are using their time and service, it's just like you go and talk to a lawyer or an accountant, you are expected to pay for their expertise even when you just talk to them and then not ask them to do anything!. Same for the dentist!. Sounds like you had a bonded filling placed on the tooth at first when you were nine and all the replacements were made of the same material!. I trust that you don't open beer bottles with your teeth!? (JK) Nor grind or clentch your teeth!? When replacements are placed, the tooth margins need to be smoothed and cleaned before the filling can be placed!. You have a few options!. 1!. repair again, 2!. repair, but in addition, placement of a pin (think of it as a reinforcing pillar), 3!. veneer (bonded or porcelain - diff quality, diff pricing) or 4!. crown!. Porcelain veneer or crown will last the longest!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
