Question: Underbite question (surgery!?)!?
I was wondering how bad your underbite had to be to get surgery!? It doesn't look bad from the front, but my profile looks horrrible!. My top teeth were behind my bottom ones until after braces!. After three years, they're straight on top of each other!. I've been made fun of my whole life for my underbite and it really bothers me!. Plus, about how much is the surgery!?Www@Answer-Health@Com

My sister had the surgery about 20 years ago!. She had an under bite and, like you, after her braces her top and bottom teeth were on top of each other!. I do remember her being teased (people can be cruel)!.
In her 20s she decided to have the surgery!. I remember going over to her apartment the day after and she was in a lot of pain, and for weeks after that while her mouth was wired shut she said she was hungry quite often, but she kind of got used to the immobile jaw (she compared it to getting used to braces!.
Once they unwired her jaw, though, she said it was one of the best decisions she ever made and was worth all the trouble!. She was happy with her results (she did have to go back into braces for a short period of time - 6 months I think), but my sister (who I always thought was kinda pretty - as much as a brother would be willing to admit) now looked stunning!. I was shocked to see what a difference it had made!.
As far as costs - it doesn't look to be cheap!. My sister's insurance covered hers (I just called to ask her - she had no idea what it costs and said her insurance covered it because she had TMJ)!. I googled it, though, and one forum said that the cost is about $30 - 35,000!.

Sounds high to me, but what do I know!? I'd call an orthodontist and ask!.
