Hi
Looks like you asked two questions!. First of all I would tell you to beg, borrow or sign up for CareCredit (dental credit card that has no interest for a year!.!.)
You WANT the general anesthesia!. Secondly, unless you have some significant health issues, or have been taking medication for bone density it shouldn't take 2 hours for the procedure!? Are you going to a specialist!? An Oral Surgeon!? Not just a dentist that does extractions!? I would strongly recommend the OS!.
The anesthetic should work fine, for most people, unless the teeth are severely infected!. Then they should give you antibiotics for 7-10 days prior to reduce the infection!. The worst part about being awake is the noise of hearing them crack the teeth out of your jawbone!.
If they put you to sleep they will still give you local anesthetic once you are asleep so you will wake up numb!. The whole procedure takes like 5 minutes per tooth or less!. So I don't know why they are telling you 2 hours!? Seems excessive!.
You are 31, the older you get the more difficult the healing is, So, you may have more pain than if you had gotten this done in your early 20's!. But it's still better than being 40+!.
The other thing you can do to help the pain is Follow the post op instructions to the letter!. When they say ice, use ice, when they say tea bags, use them!. salt water rinses gently, your irrigator etc!. all will promote healing and keep the swelling down!. One of the most painful parts of the extractions is the swelling, so use the ice!. Don't take a pain pill and go to bed!. You'll wake up looking like a chipmunk and be very unhappy!. The other painful thing is a "dry socket" this happens when the blood clot gets dislodged from the extraction site!. Opens things up bascially straight to the nerve!. I've never had one but I hear it is the most excrutiating thing in dentistry!. So be careful, no smoking, no drinking thru a straw!. Nothing that creates suction!.
and finally, I know I'm going on and on, do it all it once!. It won't be that much more, and then you will be done with it!.
