Help! Wisdom Teeth Surgery Questions?!

Question: Help! Wisdom Teeth Surgery Questions!?
I will be having a few wisdom teeth taken out this week!. I do have what they call dental phobia!. I believe an oral surgeon will be working on my teeth!. I hope to be sedated with an IV!. I would like to know while I'm in a deep sleep, will I feel any pain but be too deep in sleep to say anything!? How does the process work of taking wisdom teeth out without the person feeling pain!? Is something put on the gums as well!? Also does the IV hurt!? Are people like me put to sleep because of being too anxious even knowing what's going on!? ThanksWww@Answer-Health@Com

I used to have dental phobia as well!. It actually stemmed from a terrible fear of needles of any kind!. I once kicked a nurse in the stomach and sent her flying across the room when I went in for an outpatien procedure on one of my feet, so I think you will understand that my fear of needles was quite severe!.

It's good that an oral surgeon will be doing the extraction!. An oral surgeon is allowed to give you a general anesthetic, while a regular dentist has to make do with nitrous oxide (laughing gas) and a local anesthetic!.

What will most likely happen (I have never heard of someone having their wisdom teeth extracted by an oral surgeon where this was not the case) is that they will put an IV in your hand which will knock you out completely!. I know when I had mine done, the nurse asked me to count backwards from five!. I panicked, because I reached one, and I was not yet asleep!. I called out to the nurse, and she laughed!. I had counted backward to four before I went to sleep!. When I woke up they heard my groggy voice continuing with three, two, and finally one!. So yes, you will be completely asleep!.

You will not feel a thing because of the general anesthetic!. A good surgeon will check to make sure you are completely asleep before he begins working on you!. It is very important that if they ask for your weight, you give them your actual weight!. I know some proud but overweight people who have shaved off pounds and not been given the correct dosage of anesthetic!. They haven't gone to sleep like they were supposed to, and the doctor has had to administer more sedative!.

As I said, you will be in a deep sleep from the general anesthetic, and you will not feel a thing!. The doctor will monitor your level of unconsciousness and will administer more sedative if it appears that he has to work on you longer than expected!. It often happens that once an oral surgeon actually gets into your mouth, he or she finds that one or more of your wisdom teeth is impacted, meaning stuck in the bone!. Impactions take more time to remove, as the surgeon has to break up the teeth before he can remove the pieces!. Don't worry, because you will be asleep throughout the entire procedure!.

After the teeth are removed, you will have stitches placed in the empty sockets!. Most surgeons place stitches which need to be physically removed and schedule you for a follow up visit!. They do that so they can be sure that everything is healing nicely and that there are no complications!. If I remember correctly, my original follow up was scheduled for seven days after the surgery!. I was careless and didn't follow the surgeon's instructions, and I ended up with a "dry socket", which means that the natural blood clot which was under the stitches was lost, which results in some pain!. I had to go back sooner than scheduled, but the solution to the problem was very simple: they packed the empty socket with gauze soaked in clove oil, which is a natural anesthetic!. I then went in a few days later, and they removed the gauze and my stitches!.

Let me just tell you now what I did that resulted in the empty or dry socket: I used a drinking straw, which is a no-no!. The suction produced when using a straw is what removed the blood clot and led to the pain!. Be sure to follow the surgeon's instructions carefully, and be sure to not suck on anything!. If you have something cold like a popsicle, simply let it dissolve in your mouth--don't suck on it and you shouldn't have a problem!.

The IV does not hurt!. There is a brief pinch when the needle is inserted, but it doesn't last long!. Depending on what kind of sedative they use, you most likely will go to sleep fairly quickly, and you will quickly forget the brief sting right after you feel it!.

It isn't just people like you who are put to sleep for this particular procedure!. As I stated earlier, everyone I know who has been to an oral surgeon has been put to sleep for the extraction!. Dentists, as I mentioned, are limited in what they can do because they are not certified to give a general anesthetic, but you need not worry about that because oral surgeons are certified to put you completely to sleep!.

One of the services offered by the oral surgeon who did my wisdom teeth extraction (there are two doctors where I live who do 90% of the wisdom teeth extractions between them, and both offer this service) is that they will give you Valium or another sedative to take before the surgery!. They will only do that if someone will be taking you and will stay with you and take you home!. Since you are going to be put to sleep, that should be the case anyway!. Call your surgeon as early as possible on Tuesday morning (if you live in the US, that is--Monday is a Federal holiday--if you live outside the US, call on Monday morning), and ask for a sedative!. I was given two: one to take the night before so I wouldn't stay up worrying, and one to take the morning of the surgery!. When we got to the office I was very happy and cheerful because of the Valium, and I had no fear at all!. See if your surgeon will not do the same for you!. If he or she knows about your history, I am quite sure they will be happy to oblige!.

After the procedure, they will wait for you to wake up!. They will go over the after care procedures with you before the surgery, and then again afterwards!. They will also cover them with the person who accompanies you to the office!. You will be given a prescription for pain medication!. Some surgeons give it in advance of the surgery so you don't need to stop on your way home, and others give it after the surgery!. Either way, you will be given pain medication!. Be sure to take it on schedule, even if you don't feel any pain!. The goal of post-operative pain medication is for you to stay ahead of the pain!. If you wait until you feel pain to take your medication, then you will have to wait for the meds to work and you will spend some time in pain!. Accordingly, be sure to take it on schedule, and that will minimize your discomfort!.

You will need to be on a liquid and soft foods diet for about a week after the extraction!. The surgeon will advise you on that!. Some people need to be on the special diet a bit longer if there were complications!. Don't worry, as it will be explained to you in detail!.

Some people experience swelling when they have their wisdom teeth removed; I did not!. The doctor will give you instructions for what to do if you swell!. Usually they just tell you to put ice packs on your face!.

There are also special instructions for cleaning your mouth after the procedure!. Be sure to follow those closely!. It will help with healing and minimize the chance of problems!.

All in all, it is not a terribly painful procedure!. Mine, with the exception of the dry socket, was a lot less painful than having regular dental work done!. Simply make sure your surgeon knows all your concerns before he or she begins work, and you should be fine!.

You shouldn't know or feel a thing!.

They will give you an IV (yes you will feel that a bit-not bad) and the next thing you know it will be over!. You'll be waking up from the anesthesia!. They will give you pain killers during the proceedure and then oral meds to take later!.

Your mouth will be sore after the surgery for about a week!. I am not very tolerant of pain!. But, I only took one of my pain pills the whole time!. Also, I was in college and couldn't miss a day (I needed the extra points for perfect attendance)!. I went to class about an hour after the oral surgery!. I wasn't feeling any pain!. Although, when it came to work, I managed to milk it for two days off!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

You will feel nothing while you are asleep!. And no if you have ever had a vaccine thats what an iv feels like!. They will have to cut the wisdom teeth out because if they don't it will damage your jawbone!. You will have stiches though, unless they are all the way through!. Dentists actually prefer to put you to sleep because it is a form of oral surgery!. I don't want to hear them cutting my teeth out, would you!?!? Don't worry, you will go to sleep and wake up an it will be all done!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

You will get an IV, it will hurt a little like a bee sting!. Ask for numbing cream before the IV goes in!. You will be asleep and not feel a thing!! You won't even remember anything!. You will wake up and be in pain later that day!. You will be given pain medicine!. You should start eating soft food!. Do not spit, blow your nose or drink from a straw!. Don't rinse your mouth by spitting!. Apply gauze and bite down to form a blood clot and to prevent dry socket!. You will be back to yourself in a few short days depending on how many teeth you had extracted!. 2 weeks topsWww@Answer-Health@Com

Hon, please just relax!. I just had my wisdom teeth out two months ago and I'm still alive to tell you about it!. I felt no pain during the surgery as I was completely knocked out!. When they put you out, you won't know a think until you wake up after the surgery and by then, they've given you heavy pain killers and your mouth will still be frozen!.
Good luck!Www@Answer-Health@Com

No, you won't feel anything at all!. Now a days, they are very good at that kind of stuff!. My friend had her wisdom teeth pulled and the aching feeling went away in a day, of course, that was after the surgery, but she didn't feel a thing during it!.
Don't worry!. These people know what their doing!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Everyone is put to sleep and you won't feel a thing!!! Be sure to have the pain pills ready and take them every 4 hours without fail!. After about 2 days, you'll be fine!. You MUST get those teeth removed!. They will be horrible to get out later in life!. Once the iv's inserted (doesn't hurt much), you won't feel a thingWww@Answer-Health@Com

Dental has adbvanced since my day but I remember nothing of it!. All I remember is the swollen face after ward!. Take only what your told to take!. You may need help first day or two!. You will need soup, things easy to swallow when you can eat and mouth rince, they should give you pain killer med or presription!. Prop up in bed as you may have some swallowing problem at first!. good luck,, *mamatxWww@Answer-Health@Com

I'm really sorry to tell you that it will probably be the most painful experience of your life!. I had mine removed 10 years ago!. They only gave me about 12 shots!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Don't panic!. I also have severe dental phobia (hadn't been in years because of it!!!), and had to go have my 4 wisdom teeth removed because of terrible pain they were causing!. I went to an oral surgeon, who did iv sedation!. They bring you to the room, put a mask over your nose (a rubber thing-think oxygen mask-but nose size), which will have "laughing gas" in it, which will help relax you!. They let you take a number of deep breath's to get relaxed, then they will insert an iv into your hand!. I felt a small pinch- like one of my annoying cousins pinched my hand for fun!!!- and then the next thing I knew the assistant was helping me out of the chair and down the hallway because I was done!!! Afterwards, I went home, laid down with my head really raised, and fell asleep!. I had someone wake me up every couple of hours to change the gauze (until the bleeding stopped-which took awhile for me as I didn't clot well) and give me crushed tylenol 3 in a little bit of water to take (hard time swallowing pills) and then I went back to sleep!. All four of mine were hard teeth to remove, and the next day, while still uncomfortable, I was up and moving around and eating soft foods!. Just remember to stay on top of taking your pain meds, and you will be fine!. Probably the second day all you will need is some motrin every couple of hours- just follow the list of post operative procedures that the oral surgeon will give you!. Trust me, if I can make it through this (I literally get nausous just thinking about the dentist) you can too!. Go in thinking how good it will feel to get these teeth out, knowing you will get a good rest afterwards, and that you will be asleep for the worst part of the procedure!!! Good luck!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

I had all four of my wisdom teeth pulled at the same time!. I'm not going to lie, it was honestly the worst pain of my life!.

I didn't feel anything through the surgery but after wards, yes!.
Trust me, when you wake up!.!.you will have NO clue what is going on!. I was out for a whole day until I really realized what happened!.

I am also allergic to codine, (which is in most pain meds!.) so they gave me pretty much a synthetic form of morphine!. I could still feel it!. After about 5 days of chip muck cheeks and not being able to eat solid food, I developed "dry sockets" in all four!. It sucked!. It was NOT because of smoking or drinking through straws, it was because I'm on Birth control which naturally dries moisture out of your body!. After about 3 weeks, I got over it!. I just took my meds and was kinda bitchy!.

Now I'm happy I had it done!. My mouth doesn't hurt, and I can eat food without cringing!.

Pretty much, just do it!. You will not die!. It will just hurt and they give you meds, so it isn't that bad!. Just don't smoke or suck out of a straw (to avoid dry sockets!.!.) You will be fine during the surgery!.

Goodluck!!! Know that whatever cannot kill you will make you stronger!.!.!.hahaha!.!.!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
