All of the answers given are correct!. Since you had not been for a cleaning in a long time, you probably did have some plaque or calculus (tartar) buildup along the gum line or just below!. More than likely, if you haven't been flossing on a regular basis, you also might have a slight case of gingivitis!.
I'm hoping they showed you the correct way to brush and floss!.!.!. because there is a right and a wrong technique!.

Most importantly, keep flossing and brushing!! To ease the soreness, use a warm saltwater rinse a few times a day!. When you floss, be sure to wrap the floss around the tooth and go below the gum line in an up-and-down motion!. GENTLY!. As you brush, tip the brush at an angle to your gum line, and make small, gently, circular motion!.!.!.do this on both the cheek surface and the tongue side surface of all teeth!. Then, brush the tops (chewing surfaces)!.!.!.and don't forget to brush your tongue (this can help prevent bad breath by brushing away bacteria)!. Be sure you are using a toothbrush with SOFT bristles!

What you are experiencing is normal!.!.!.don't worry!. Just take good care of your mouth now, with the saltwater rinses, brushing, flossing, etc!.!.!.and avoid spicy or acidic foods for a couple of days!.

It could be that you had some tartar under your gumline and the dentist had to push your gums back a bit to get to it!. Just carry on brushing and flossing as normal and your gums will be fine in a few days!. There will be no permanent damage!. If your gums are really sore, you could get some Corsodyl mouthrinse from the chemist and use that for a few days to help them heal quicker, but unfortunately it can stain your teeth a bit, especially if you drink tea or coffee after using it!.

Well done for going to the dentist!. Don't let this put you off!. If you've not had any cleaning done for years, your dentist probably had to do quite a thorough job, hence the soreness!. It shouldn't be nearly as bad next time!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

It sounds like your Denist might have been a bit harsh when she was cleaning your teeth!. She probably hasn't damaged your teeth though!. Try being really gentle when you're brushing your teeth for the next few days but if your gums are still swollen then I would go and see another Dentist and explain what happened!. I changed Dentists recently because I wasn't happy with my regular one and the one I go to now is so much better!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

yes it is, if you got fluoride done, that's when they fill little plastic trays with a paste and put it in your mouth and you have to keep it in for a few minutes!. or some offices make you rise your mouth with fluoride instead of the tray thing!.
Don't worry it will be better!. Just make sure when u go back tell them that it hurt your gumsWww@Answer-Health@Com
