I suffered with the same problem for years!. Grinding caused jaw ache which then caused a headache in my left temple area - serious pain!.
This is a very specialised area, a typical dentist probably won't know enough about it, through my experience, even a lot of Orthodontists are not specialised enough, you need to see an Orthodontist who specialises in TMJ!.
Once, he has diagnosed the route of your problem, he/she may advise you to use a soft splint at night, a hard splint during the day, permanent build-ups onto your teeth or braces etc!. Maybe one or some these!.
The good news is that there are options available, but these specialists charge high fees for their expertise!.
For me, the temple head aches have stopped, I rarely get jaw ache (previously, at least ones per week) and my jaw is overall much more comfortable!.

A dentist can have a bite guard custom made to fit your teeth!. So when you grind, you'll be grinding on plastic rather than wearing your teeth down and injuring your jaw!. I have one!. If I had paid the full amount, I would have paid $500!. The cost could vary depending on your insurance and dentist!. A sports bite guard works in a pinch and is only a few dollars!. These are hard to actually keep in your mouth when asleep!. The dental bite guards that are custom made snap over your teeth and will not fall out!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Yes, the dentist can measure and fit a dental gum-shield, which can fit over the teeth and help to cushion the 'grinding'!.
Not sure whether this service is chargeable or not!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

See a dentist!. There are devices that you can be fitted for that will keep you from grinding them in your sleep!. They have to be fitted for your mouth and I believe a dentist is the only one capable of doing this!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

try chewing gum, u can also get stuff from a dentist or orthodontist!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Sounds like you have TMJ (Temporomandibular joint ) disorder - just like me!!! I also get a locked jaw sometimes!.

I recently got mouth guards (splints) from my dentist!. I'm not sure how effective the ones are from drugstores!. The mouth guards help me during my sleeping hours when I probably clench and grind my teeth the most!. I used to wake up with sore jaws! But it's getting better - at least at night!. My dentist also advised me to relax my jaws - concentrate on it during my waking hours - make sure that my top and bottom teeth are not in contact (of course it's hard!!!)!.

Also try these techniques:

Simple, gentle therapies are usually recommended first!. If those don't work, mouth guards and more aggressive treatments may be considered!. Surgery is generally a last resort!. Fortunately, there are many steps you can take at home long before that point!.

Try massaging the various muscles that may be involved!. Probe all of the muscles of the face, shoulders, and back of the neck!. (Avoid the area around the throat!.) Press on the muscles to identify extremely painful points!. Massage the painful spot with hard, slow, short strokes!. Do this several times a day until the muscle is no longer painful when pressed!.

To massage the masseter muscles on each side of your jaw, place your thumb inside your mouth and squeeze the thick muscle in your cheek (toward the back of your mouth) with your fingers!. To get at the harder-to-reach jaw muscles inside your mouth, use your index finger to probe for tender areas behind the teeth, and use the finger to massage these spots!.

Other home-care therapies, such as moist heat or cold packs on the face, vitamin supplements, or biofeedback are useful for some people!. Exercising several times each week may help you relax, strengthen your body, increase flexibility, and increase your ability to handle pain!.

Read as much as you can, as opinion varies widely on how to treat TMJ disorders!. Get several doctor's opinions!. The good news is that most people eventually find something that helps!.

Edited to add:
DO NOT CHEW GUM - it will make it worse!!!
My mouth guard cost $100 with insurance!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
