Bit of skin clipped...?!

Question: Bit of skin clipped!.!.!.!?
I'm getting braces in August, but I'm getting 5 wisdom teeth pulled first in June!. My orthodontist reccommended that, while I get my teeth pulled, I should also have this piece of skin on my gums clipped!.

It's the circled bit on that pic!. (Sorry about the lovely pic, but I can't remember the proper name for it!. lol) I was just wondering what the point of doing this is, and whether of not it really matters if I get rid of it or not!. (I tried to ask him!.!. didn't really get a straight answer!.) Also, will it cost more!?
Thanks!Www@Answer-Health@Com

That piece of skin is called a frenum!. The reason your orthodontist wants you to have it snipped is because it is really a muscle attachment for your lip and it is attached too high!. This attachment can have a negative impact on your orthodontics and contribute to future gum recession!. It is a good idea to have it done and shouldn't be too painful!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

That bit of skin is called a frenum (specifically a labial frenum, since it attaches to your lip)!. If it doesn't bother you and you don't want it done, you can ask them to leave it!. Some people don't like the way it looks, and it may affect your speech!. In some case it can also cause a gap between your teeth!. If you don't have any of these problems, then just talk to your dentist and see if he has any other reason for suggesting it (tell him to give you a straight answer!)!. I don't know about the cost either - that's another question for the dentist :)Www@Answer-Health@Com
