I know it can be scary going for the first time of anything - and especially so when it's going to the dentist, as people tell a lot of stories :/

Anyway, fillingsare nothing to worry about!. The procedure is pretty simple - the dentist will apply a little gel to numb the gum around the tooth that's to be filled before giving you the anaesthetic - the gum is already numb so you don't feel the needle or anything (at most a little scratch)!. Then they'll wait for you to feel numb (it might feel strange and makes your lips rubbery, but it's no big deal)!.

Then they start cleaning out the tooth/teeth with the handpiece!. I say handpiece, I mean drill - but drill sounds scarier! It's really nothing to be afraid of - you'll be numb, so you won't feel anything except contact!. It's not like a drill you use for DIY - it's very small and precise!. There are 2 different ones they use - the fast one (this makes a high pitched noise and sprays out water) and the slow one (it makes a deeper noise and is used dry)!.

The nurse will be keeping your mouth dry with a little vaccum type thing called an aspirator!. Once the decay has been cleaned away, they'll fill the teeth with either amalgam (silver) or composite (white) - if it's composite they use a blue light to set it hard!. They might need to adjust them after - and then you're done! The time taken really depends on the cavities, and the dentist, but all in all it should take about an hour tops!.

Try and keep calm throughout - if theres a way you like to relax, use that! You could also let your dentist know if you're nervous, and they'll take things slower for you!. If it's really bad, they can give you a sedative - but it's better if you face it, as you'll see that it's all really simple, and you'll be more confident if you need any other treatment!.

All the best with your appointment!Www@Answer-Health@Com

First they will take a cotton swab and put this cold numbing jelly on the area with the cavity and after a few minutes they will inject the Novocaine which will be just a small pinch!.

Then the dentist will drill the cavity and fill it and the seal it!. He or she will ask to bite down a few times to make sure it is comfortable for you and then that is it!. I don't think you can eat or drink for 2 hours after!.

The whole process will probably take about 30 to 45 minutes per tooth!.

You won't feel much, the only uncomfortable thing is having to keep your mouth open so long that it starts to get sore!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

It's not so much painful as it is stinky (the smell of ground up tooth) and loud (the sound of teeth getting drilled)!. The shots are not that bad, at least not the second or third set!. The suggestion about gas isn't bad but they don't always use it for cavities!.

I'm not trying to scare you, I'm just being honest!. Your mouth will be sore for a day or two after the Novocaine wears off!. To be honest, I wish I had flossed more and taken better care to avoid fillings!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

ask for the gas, you wont care if they rip all of your teeth out!.

if you get the shots, the first one hurts for a little bit, but its not bad!. your mouth will be numb for a little while!.

However, if they are small cavities and your dentist is on top of his game he might use a different procedure using ultraviolet light and no drill at all!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

what usually happens and (this is the worst part) they numb your mouth and then stick numb your nerves around the teeth - with an injection of course - usually a small half a second pain at the beginning!.!.!.other than this its just sitting there and waiting

you wont feel a thing and if you do you need to tell them right away!.!.!.they obviously didnt hit all your nerves

its really not bad!.!.!.i had 0 cavities until i was about 17, then i had 1, and the next time i had 6!!! but its all gravy - its easy and doesnt hurt at all except that one poke!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

At the dentist I go to, before they stick the needle in to numb you, they put this numbing stuff thats on a cloth on your gums ( they wipe it on there ) and then they stick the needle in to numb your mouth, so you dont even feel the needle go in, and you dont feel the drill!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
