Why do brits have bad teeth?!
Question: Why do brits have bad teeth!?
even though they have universal healthcare!? are they too lazy to brush them!?Www@Answer-Health@Com
Answers:
I think they have healthy teeth, just not STRAIGHT teeth!. I think Americans put a lot more value and importance on straight teeth!. Orthodontists are very successful here, they must not be over there!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
It's just a stereotype!. I know that certain areas in Britain are the worst in Europe for example (well done Glasgow), but I've not seen any studies saying that the UK as a whole is worse than other countries!.
It's worse in some areas than others, but overall, the more a deprived an area is, the worse their teeth will be (and their health in general)!. Yes, there is the National Health Service (universal health care), but access is not always great (the inverse care law states that the people who need a service the most will be the least likely to have access to it)!.
There is also an issue with people's perceived importance of dental care - more affluent people care more about dental problems, whereas poorer people might only go to the dentist if they're in abject pain!.
Water fluoridation plays some part (although 10% of the UK is in fact fluoridated:
http://en!.wikipedia!.org/wiki/Water_fluor!.!.!.
)!.
Diet is also important - in certain places, it's the norm for kids to drink cans of soda at breakfast, lunch and dinner!. Again, that's likely to be in more deprived areas!.
And wealth itself is also a factor!. Dental work costs money under the National Health Service (NHS) - it's not free, like most medical services - unless you're under 18, pregnant, or on certain benefits/welfare!. That's because dentists negotiated a different contract than doctors when the NHS was founded - so that the NHS subsidises dentists for their work but the patient still pays part!. Many dentists also choose to go private instead of working for the NHS, so you might have heard that the UK has a shortage of dentists!.
As you can see, it's not a simple case of people being 'too lazy to brush'!. A lot of these factors come into play in other places - for example Kentucky, has the worst dental health in the US, with 1 in 10 people having lost all their teeth!. You can read an article about this here:

Generally the British do not have bad teeth!. Over the past people have stereotyped them this way because in the 1800s they did not have good dental care!. In addition, during the Revolutionary War, the US was not found of the British, so it was possible the rumor could have started then!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
i don't think we all do!.
I'm from Glasgow, and i know my teeth are bad!. But thats not really my fault, my mum never put any importance on brushing my teeth every day when i was growning up!.
I got braces when i was 19, and got them off 5 months ago (i'm 21 now) But they still aren't straight!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
