My son is 9 years old and I just got braces put on him?!

Question: My son is 9 years old and I just got braces put on him!?
His teeth are really messed up!. The orthadontist told me this will be "phase 1" and this set of braces will be on for 18 months!. He has to have this jaw widener put in too, he said for 3-6 months!. Seems like when my brother had braces they were on for like 3 years!. Do orthadontists under estimate the actual time!?Www@Answer-Health@Com

Answers:
I had braces when I was 9 years old!. I had to have a roof expander too!. I got them off in about 2 years!.

Orthodontists can sometimes under-estimate actual time, but the process has become faster since I was a kid!.

My friend just got high-speed braces on, and she said the orthodontist told her she'd only have them for a year to 18 months!. Her teeth were very crooked, and after 4 months, they already look 40-50% better!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

YES! Orthodontists underestimate the amount of time needed 99% of the time! My teeth weren't too bad and I had mine on for almost three year!. Depending on your orthodontist (whether he/she is a perfectionist or whether they are out to slap braces on for money) your son may have them on for three years or five!. Make sure that your son doesn't get too excited the first time the orthodontists says he has "----- time left" because it's usually longer!Www@Answer-Health@Com

Not usually, if anything they over estimate, because everyone's dental issues are different!. Your son may actually have them on for less time!. It depends really on how long it takes for his teeth to shift properly, and if he follows all the instructions ( wearing head gear, spacers, etc!.)!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

The time frame they give you is just an estimate!. I was told I would have my braces for 2 years and they came off at 1 year 10 months!. However, my mom was estimated at 2 years and because of other medical complications (not related to the braces) had hers for 5 years!. I just depends on the patient and their mouth!. We are all unique, so one treatments will not work the same on everyone!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Those times are just approximations!. After his first few check-ups they will be able to give you a better approximation!. If he is 9 years old then they will not leave his braces on for too long because he is still growing!. It also depends on if he wears his appliances for the recommended time/the recommended wayWww@Answer-Health@Com

Actually, I was expected to have mine on for 3 years, but only had them on for half of that!. Orthodonitists offer an estimate, but they don't really know!. It all depends on how quickly or slowly your sons teeth move!. At a younger age, they should move more quickly!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Yes they absolutely underestimate the time!. My teeth were NOT bad besides a few crooked ones, and when I get them off I will have had them on for 2 years when I was ONLY suppose to for 1 year!. I would expect way more than 18 months especially since his teeth are really screwed up, mine were about a 3 on a scale from 1-10!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

sometimes they do sometimes they don't!. my orthodontist said around the exact time it took so you never know!.!.!.

plus it depends if your son takes care of them and follows all the rules!. if he doesn't it could take a lot longer!.!.!.make sure he always wears rubber bands if he needs them or whatever else they make him do!.!.!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

You might have messed up his teeth
by putting them on so earlyWww@Answer-Health@Com

Oh yeah, they do!. Why did you give him bad genes lady!?Www@Answer-Health@Com

Isn't 9 a bit too early for braces!? They usually tell you to come back when all the baby teeth have been replaced with adult teeth, which at about 12 or 13 years old!. I've never had braces, but my cousin is 14 and she's getting them done soon!. She went to the doctor when she was about 9, 10 or 11 and they told her to come back when she was at least 12 or 14!. She only has one very bad tooth that needs to be fixed because it has another tooth behind it!. My aunt had hers about four years ago, and she kept them on for about a year or two!. It depends on how bad the teeth are and also how fast they adjust, but 9 is pretty young for braces!.!.!. Unless you want to put them on again later on!? I'm not so sure about it because it might mess up his teeth more at this stage and his time might change if there is improvement or if the teeth are still not adjusting!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

phase 1 indicates that there will following "phases!." he'll probablt get his braces back on!. does he still have baby teeth!? ortho's are famous for putting braces on baby teeth just so that u have to pay to get braces again in a few years!.
i dont know why they do it, but my friend too had braces in stages!.
they put em on, took em off and put them back on!.!.!.!.
i only had my braces on once but i waited till i was 13 so my mouth was kinda at its adult size!.
at 9 he still has a lot of growing to do!. if they can convince hell need braces again, they will!.
i had a roof expander for 9 months if that helps any!.
also if the widener doesn't do what they expect they may have to break his jaw to widen it!. sry i know it sounds terrible!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

My brother has had the same situation!. He had his on at 10 and he is 14 now!. It all depends on how well his mouth adjust and if the wears his rubber bands when he is supposed to when it comes time to it!. I feel like some orthodontist do under estimate so I was glad my doctor never told me when he thought they would be off of me!. Mine toke 3 years!. But because my brother doesnt wear his rubber bands like he is suppossed to, his are taking longer to come off!. Make sure your son does exactly what he is told to do by the dentist!. The more he listens and follows his instructions, the sooner they will come off!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
