Nasty toothache, no $$ for dentist, made just a hair too much last year for clin!

Question: Nasty toothache, no $$ for dentist, made just a hair too much last year for clinics!.!.!.what to do!?
I've got a tooth, on which a root canal was begun last year, before I lost my job (with insurance) and wound up working for no benefits!. Unfortunately, it is now swollen, tight, and throbbing, and seems exceptionally cold sensitive!. No sleep last few nights!. I'm dead poor, can't afford a regular dental visit, x-rays, etc!., but the clinics say I made too much last year to qualify!.!.!.not that I got to see any of that $!.

Anyone have any suggestions!? Are there clinics, for which you don't have to qualify, or any dentists who will do a simple extraction for minimal cost (ie: enough to make a profit still, but not to fund a caribbean cruise) !?!?

Is there something I can do at home, other than advil and oral analgesic (read: worthless) gel!?Www@Answer-Health@Com

This is a two or three part question!.

You already know you have an abscess!. If you have inflammation in an area, there is more blood flow to that area!. If you place that same area lower than the rest of your body, there will be even more blood in the area!. This makes the area start to throb!. Think about it!. If you sprain your ankle, you are supposed to sit or lie down and elevate your foot to keep the excess blood from accumulating there because it would cause throbbing!. If you are passing out because your nervous system has prepared you for "fight or flight" by dilating all of your peripheral vessels, which deprives your brain of blood, you are supposed to lie down with your head lower than your body to restore blood flow to the brain!.

If someone has an abscess and I have just started a root canal or if they are going on antibiotics for a few days before I remove the tooth, I tell them to sleep on an extra pillow to elevate their head!. If that doesn't work, they can move to a recliner or the sofa so they can keep their head really elevated!. This will minimize the blood flow to the area and therefore minimize the throbbing and pain!.

I am not telling you to do this, because I don't know about any underlying medical problems, but I can tell you that a prescription dose of ibuprofen would be 800 mg taken up to 4 times a day!.

Free Care

Contact your local or state dental association and and see if there are any dentists who provide free or reduced cost care for low-income, disabled or senior patients!.

Call your local health department and ask about health centers that provide dental care for free or on a sliding scale!.

Your local United Way may also be aware of such a clinic!. In some areas, you can reach them now by dialing 2-1-1 for "non-emergency information!."

Go to a dental school, if there is one near you, for reduced costs!.

If you are a senior citizen, call your local Area Agency on Aging or Office on Aging!. If you can not find a listing in your local phone book on the "County Government" pages (usually marked with blue borders), call toll-free 1-800-677-1116 to find how to contact the Area Agency on Aging serving you!.

Check http://www!.toothwoman!.net to see if low-cost or free dental services are available near you!.

Check http://bphc!.hrsa!.gov and choose "Find a Health Center" to see if there is a low-cost clinic near you!.

Check http://nfdh!.org/joomla_nfdh/content/view!.!.!. to see if your state has a "Donated Dental Services" program!. D!.D!.S!. is designed to locate dentists who will give free care to patients who are financially compromised due to medical problems!. This is a process that will take a couple of months to get your information and then arrange for someone to see you!. Not all states have D!.D!.S!. programs!.

I personally offer free care or reduced fee care or "overlook the bill" care when I know the exact circumstances of a person's financial position!. If they have had a medical hardship, for instance, I am sympathetic!. You can't come in just looking for free care, though!. You have to come in with the intentions of doing the best you can and then I decide exactly how I am going to handle the financial aspect!. I can usually tell who is actually trying to pay and who simply wants to skip out on me!. I do not usually consider smokers to be in financial need, though!. If they can find a couple thousand dollars a year for cigarettes, they could find the same amount of money and fix almost any dental problem!. Maybe you can find a local dentist who has the same attitude!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Check with your local colleges that have a dental program!. Call and explain your situation!. If you don't mind being a guinea pig, the students may need someone to practice on!. (They are supervised)!.

If it is swollen and throbbing, you need to get it taken care of right away!. If it abcesses and you do not treat it, the bacteria can cause serious medical problems and even death!.

If the dental school can not take you then start calling dentists and see if any will work with you on a payment plan!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

You can go to the hospital and they'll give you a prescription for antibiotics and a shot to definetly numb the pain!. you can pay on the bill monthly it doesnt have to be much i pay like 30 dollars a month because i've had to do the same thing when my tooth was hurting and on top of that i had an abcess which made it a lot worse because it caused alot of pressure along with the painWww@Answer-Health@Com

I've used clove oil before, it seems to help!. I also would call the dentist and see what they are willing to do with you!. I have done it in the past and am now doing it for my daughters braces!. If you have a good history with them, I don't see why they wouldn't, mine wanted post dated checks to ensure payment!. Hope you feel better!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

where do you live!? i know the dentist i work for she always give $ off when people don't have insurance!. try going to a dentist and tell them you don't have ins!. and see what they can do for you!. you need to take some antibiotics for the infection and get the tooth pulled!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

try to find out if there is a dental study in your area!. Or try to google in free dental clinc, hopefully you will find somethig in your area!. Good luck w/ that!. Oh I also know that clove oil works wonders and gurgle w/ listerine!. take care!.!.

Man you have my sympathies! There are not many folks on whom I'd wish a toothache!.

Liberal use of Ambesol and bourbon can get things quieted down enough for you to sleep, but it won't cure the toothache!. At best, it will give you a week or two to save money for a dental visit!.

Last time I had an extraction, I believe it cost $75!.00!. I suggest you call around the local dentist and tell them your problem and ask the cost of a simple extraction!. You will probably encounter a couple or three dentist who want to finish the root canal rather than pull the tooth, but if you ask if they are willing to do the job free of charge, they will change their tune fast enough!.

Good Luck and God Bless!.

Sorry to hear about the toothache! I know EXACTLY how that feels! It sucks! I had a molar tooth pulled last year for only 100 bucks!. I'm not sure of any clinics because I go to a regular general dentist!. I know for temporary relief other then Ambesol and etc, you could rub some Rum up there around the gums, that seemed to work for me!. And I actually tried Baby Orajel and that worked good for me too!. I know there is carecredit(www!.carecredit!.com) that works like a credit card that you might qualify for if that's something you wanna deal with!. (I didn't get approved for it-but you might)!. Sorry I wasn't much help!. Hope that toothache goes away :(Www@Answer-Health@Com

I am sorry for your pain, I am in the same situation living in Memphis, where I just moved!. I'm trying to comfortable in a new place n now i've had this killer toothache for 1 weeks!. told I woke up and my jaw was swollen and slightly tingly!. i have been do research all day and i have found out that i very well may have an abcess!. I have no money to even think about walking into a dentist office, so i am currently relating the same issues!.!. hungy, tired, throbbing and cranky, on the verg of tears - wanting 2 slam my head up against the wallWww@Answer-Health@Com

Maybe you could call the dentist and explain your situation!. There is a possibility that since they've already worked on you that they would be more likely to be willing to help you with the remainder of your root canal!. Most dentists would not want you walking around with an obvious infection!. You could also ask them if they would be willing to take payments for what ever you may owe!. Is there a dental school nearby!? Maybe they could help you and not charge so much!.

The advil (etc!.) won't help the infection so you need to see someone soon before it gets any worse!.

I'm so sorry you're having tooth problems, I've been there too!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Hey My friend:
I was going to ask how are you but the question lets me know!.
You have to get to a dentist, it sounds like you have an infection in the canal and will have to be on antibiotics for a few days before it can be pulled!. I KNOW FROM EXPERIENCE!. If the dentist tries to yank it with an infection the freezing will not take and you'll be in a whole lot of hurt!. It happened to me, and the tooth broke, I was without freezing for 1 hour in that chair while the emergency dentist I went to had to pull every piece out a little at a time!. When you have an infection the pus is a base substance, and the novacaine is acidic and they cancel each other out so no freezing occurs!. Get it taken care of before it spreads to your sinuses!!
