There are two options!. One option is that you can get a kit from a drugstore and follow the directions!.
The second option, and the most comfortable, is to get a custom mouth guard from your dentist!. It is more comfortable because it is fit to your exact oral specifications!. This is the most expensive option, but if it is medically necessary, such as for nocturnal bruxism (night grinding of the teeth), then very often insurance will pay most or part of the cost!. I know you said you don't want to get them at the orthodontist!. A general dentist can make these as well, and it might be slightly less expensive!.
