Over here (Germany) oral and maxillofacial surgeons have degrees in dentistry and general medicine!. Therefore they have a quite comprehensive knowledge!. However, there are aspects of dentistry like orthodontics and prosthetics where their expertise does not go as far!. One of the nightmares of dentistry are oral/maxillofacial surgeons placing implants where there is sufficient bone but not the proper place for teeth!.
