Ya, mercury is a metal, heavy, and dangerous!. So is Sodium, light metal, but DEADLY!. So how come we take dangerous metals into our bodies!? Well, when we make them into a salt, such as Sodium Chloride, or Mercury _______ fill in the blank, they are no longer active metals!. To be honest even though amalgam has been used for a very long time (100 years or so), both pro and anti amalgam camps haven't come out with a study saying amalgam is 100% safe or 100% deadly!. But the group that contends that amalgam is safe to use have released studies in JADA and JAMA regarding amalgam and neurological affects in kids and there's no reported problems!.
Despite what anti-amalgam ppl are saying, they have NO study saying amalgam causes!.!.!. neuro problems, kidney problems, etc, etc!. They have a lot of conjecture and forums with people saying "It's true, it has happened to me!." posts!.
They say there's mercury vapor released from fillings!. This is true and it has been taught to me in dental school!. The amount of mercury you get is tiny!. You'd get more mercury from eatting fish!. Even our government can't definitively tell us how much mercury is bad for us!. The FDA, CDC, and WHO all have their own recommended limits of how much mercury we can handle in a day!.
You'll also hear "Well how come there's laws in California (or other countries) stating that you need to collect the amalgam and properly dispose of it!? If it's safe can't you flush it down the drain!?" To respond to this, an amalgam filling is only a couple milligrams (1-2 at best)!. If I dumped that in the water, the amount of mercury coming from that isn't detectable!. But there's more than 1 person getting fillings!. Maybe 10's of thousands of people!. At that rate you'd get a couple pounds of amalgam in the water!. At that concentration, yes it's deadly so that's why you need to collect it!.
To sum it up, it's the dosage that makes the poison!. Botox can be used safely, but if given 20 or 30 it can kill someone!. Likewise, multi day vitamins can be harmful if you take 5 or 10 at once!. So anything taken in extreme can kill you!.
I've seen people post that some holistic dentists need special equipment to remove amalgam!. That's a lie, a bold face lie!. Once again dosage makes the the poison!. Someone in another post said her amalgam filling removal and replacement cost her $800 dollars!. That's outrageous and ridiculous!. Many people don't know that resin/white/composite fillings cost more to a patient than regular amalgam/silver fillings, and the quack "holistic" dentists scare you into changing your amalgam fillings into white ones!. Most of the time I can use composites but sometimes if it's difficult to isolate and keep the tooth dry (which is important for white fillings) I use amalgam!.
If, as a patient, you still want to use composites for peace of mind then as a dentist, I'll respect that but it'll cost more to you and they need to be replaced too just like the silver ones every few years!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

It is really annoying, especially since there have been no studies that have conclusively shown that amalgam fillings are toxic! I think they'd get phased out anyway though - the material has been in use for more that 100 years but better alternatives are now available, without the effects of mercury pollution on the environment or the cost of safe mercury disposable!.
As for junk science, the stuff that's claimed about the effects of fluoride is also unreal! It's irritating when tabloid media gets hold of something and makes it into a public health scare - like the report that showed that MMR vaccines cause autism, which was effectively disproven, but parents still avoided the vaccine due to bad press, leading to measles and mumps outbreaks down the line!Www@Answer-Health@Com
