It really depends on what type of anesthetic they give you!.!.!.some anesthetics have more "vasoconstrictors" in them, causing them to stay in your system for longer!. Also, everyone metabolises them differently, so for the same medication it may take 5 hours to wear off with you, may take 2 hours with someone else!.
I heard once that if you're more active (get your heart rate up) it will help to cycle through your system faster!. Not that you probably feel like running around after a bunch of dental work :)
But, if it doesnt go away in 8-10 hours I would call your DDS!. In very rare instances it can cause permanent numbing, but I think that it is more common for the lower teeth (again VERY rare)
As far as the oral surgury question!.!.!.!. if you are talking about "IV sedation" they will give you a general anesthetic (via IV in your arm) and once you are out they will go in with the regular dental anesthetic and numb the area, so you won't wake up in pain!. There is also "concious sedation" which can be a pill that you take ahead of time to relax you, again, they still will numb for the procedure, it just takes away a lot of the anxiety!.
Hope this helps :)Www@Answer-Health@Com
