13 month old with an extra tooth?!

Question: 13 month old with an extra tooth!?
My son was born with a "bump" in his upper gum!. One pediatrician thought there could be a tooth behind it!. One pediatrician thought it was just a frenulum and an ENT thought it was a cyst!. Either way, everyone thought we should just pay attention to it and nothing should be done at the time!. Over the months the "bump" appeared to get smaller although we weren't sure if it could have just been his mouth had gotten larger!. My son grew out his four bottom and four top teeth!. His top 2 middle teeth had a gap between them!. Yesterday he had a book in his hand, fell on the edge and cut his gum right where the gap is!. After looking today I see a tooth! We have an appt with the pediatric dentist but I just wanted to know if anyone had a child with an extra tooth, what was done and does that mean he will also grow an extra permanent tooth!. Thanks!Www@Answer-Health@Com

Answers:
Supernumerary or extra teeth in kids aren't uncommon, and are usually just extracted - there won't necessarily be an extra permanent tooth, but they can do an x-ray and check!. The dentist will probably do an x-ray or two to see exactly what's under there - it might not be a tooth, but an odontome/mesiodens - basically a lump of tooth-like material that's not a properly formed tooth (between the 2 upper front teeth if it's a mesiodens)!.

In any case, they'll probably extract it at some stage so it doesn't interfere with the permanent teeth forming and erupting!.

mentalde is right!. Sounds like what's called a mesiodens!. The dentist will probably want x-rays to confirm, but may not take them at his age!. This usually does not affect the permanent teeth, but sometimes when there is an abnormalty with the baby teeth, he may have abnormalties in a different area in the adult teeth such as a adult tooth that never develops, etc!. Eventually it will be removed, but my guess it that they will just "watch it" for now!. These problems can all be corrected, just make sure to take you son to the dentist regularly to have his check-ups so they can watch his development!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
