Most dentists will tell you the same thing as your mother !.!.!.!.!.
However the chance of any damage occuring is small if you look after the piercing!.
The only advice I can give you is after the swelling goes down get the barbell reduced to minimise the risk of biting it!.
It only takes about a second to pierce the tongue - if you suck on ice before you have the piercing, it can help reduce the pain!. The pain isn't really that bad - it just feels really strange having something stuck all the way through your tongue - make sure you go to a good quality, qualified body piercer and make sure the jewellery is good quality too!. My wife has had her tongue pierced three times and she loves it!.
BTW, genitals heal quicker than your tongue but tongue is the second quickest area to heal!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
