How sturdy are cavity fillings?!

Question: How sturdy are cavity fillings!?
Hey how sturdy are cavity fillings!? Let's say for example if you have a big cavity filling on the bottom and you have a sharp tooth on the top putting pressure on the cavity filling!.!.!.!.does that break the filling!? I am talking about amalgams (the silver ones) for the fillings!. How strong are they!? Are they as strong as the tooth!? thanks!Www@Answer-Health@Com

Answers:
Amagam is a mixture of metals, they are very sturdy!.!.!. unfortunetly with a very large filling, its very common for the surrounding "thin walls" of your natural tooth to break instead of the metal filling!. For a large filling, you may want to look into different options, a composite (white) filling a lot of the times is stronger and since it is bonded to the tooth, as a whole makes the tooth walls stronger and more resistant to breaking/cracking, there are also onlays that are basically fillings that are lab made out of porcelain that are VERY strong, the downfall to those is they take 2 visits and can be costly!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

If the filling is done properly, there shouldn't be any problem with it!. But if not properly matched, yeah, I think that you could break a filling!. Amalgams are very sturdy!. I've got a few of them that are probably older than you are!. The newer materials used for fillings hold up well!. They had better to because I've got two of them right up front on top!.

If your worried, get a second opinion about your fillings from another dentist!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

If they are properly condensed, they serve for a lifetime!.!.!. the sharp tooth up will not break the filling, at the time of condensation the filling is contoured so that it does not put pressure on the restoration!.!.!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

They are very steardy but as the time passes on the filling will start comming out & you will have to redo itWww@Answer-Health@Com
