Question: My Dentist doesn't do implants or posts, he sends his patients to a specialist!.!?
Would it be beneficial to find a dentist who does implants or just go to the specialist!?Www@Answer-Health@Com

Answers:
Most general dentists do not do every procedure under the "dental umbrella!." There are areas of specialization in dentistry, such as oral surgery, orthodontics, prosthodontics (crowns, bridges, implants & dentures) and endodontics (root canals) to name a few!. Having said that!.!.!. (1) a general dentist can perform all areas of dentistry as do specialists but "must be held to the same standard as the specialists," according to the law, and (2) there is NOT a Dental Implant specialty!. In fact, as dentists, it is against the law in CA for us to advertise that we are Implant "Specialists" because Implantology is not recognized by the state licensing board as a true specialty!.

Now to your case!.!.!. Your dentist does not place implants (the surgical placement of the the titanium post into bone), but does he restore them!? (ie: make the crowns to go on top of implants) I would tell you that a dentist who does not place implants but restores them is very commonplace professionally speaking, and is fine!. Most dentists have a team of specialists they work with to do what is best for their patients!. (!.!.!.Just like referring out a teenager for wisdom teeth extraction to an oral surgeon!.) If your dentist does not restore implants (put the crown on the surgically placed post) then I WOULD be worried that he/she is a bit antiquiated, and is being bypassed by technology!. (Red Flag!) Might be time for a change!. If he/she does restore them, then stay with your dentist if you trust him/her and have been cared for appropriately in the past!. Sorry for the long-winded answer, but I hope it provides some clarity for you!.!.!.

It would probably be more beneficial to go to the specialist- the prosthodontist!. This doctor will be better trained and experienced with implants than a general practitioner would be!. The more experience, the better!. You want to have the most success possible with your implant, so you need to see the most experienced person possible!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Go to a specialist you are better off seeing a periodontist or an oral surgeon!. General Dentist should not do these types of procedures!. Specialist have to go through 2 years more of speacialty training, that is why general dentist dont do these types of complex procedures and if they do, its usually not the same quality that you would get from a specialistWww@Answer-Health@Com

Only a trained dentist can do implants, so he is a specialist in a way, unless you meant 'post graduate - endodontist' or oral surgeon as specialist!. Stick to your dentist if you are happy with him, as you need to visit general dentist more often than you need an implantologist!Www@Answer-Health@Com

Whether implantology is - legally - a specialty in your state or not, implantology *is* a specialty!. In fact, there exist the American Academy of Implant Dentistry, existing since ***1951*** (it's the oldest in the entire WORLD)!.

The AAID has different levels of membership!. You want the dentist who does your implant to either be a Fellow or a Diplomate of this association:
"Fellows (F) have been certified by their peers and have met national standards of education and practice in oral implantology!. Due to the more extensive experiential requirements for Fellow Membership, Fellows are required to demonstrate advanced knowledge and experience in implant dentistry!.

Diplomates (D) are AAID members who have become Diplomates of the American Board of Oral Implantology/Implant Dentistry (ABOI/ID)!. The ABOI/ID is a certification agency that serves independently to protect members of the public who seek dental implant care!. The designation signifies that these dentists have met the highest criterions in oral implantology - they have met educational and experiential standards; and, they have reached an in-depth level of knowledge and acquired a proficient level of skill and ability!."

You can also go to the American Board of Oral Implantology (chartered in 1968):

and chose a dentist who is an ABOI diplomate!.

Of course you have the option to go to any uncredentialed "implantologist" but I wouldn't chose this option for my mouth!.

As a matter of fact, I just had a full mouth reconstruction and my dentist is an AFAAID (associate fellow of AAID) and a FICOI (fellow of the International Congress of Oral Implantologist), and also an oral surgeon so that he can do the "tough" job if needed!.

My case was very difficult but my dentist went far beyond my wildest expectations, and I get a lot of compliment for my beautiful (and healthy!!!) mouth!.

Chose the best for yourself!. You deserve it!Www@Answer-Health@Com
