Answers:
a few things could be happening

1!. your temporary crown is too high and needs to be adjust to fit your bite better(trust me this will hurt, it is like walking on a sprained ankle)
2!. your doctor may have missed a canal and you could have a live nerve still causing your pain(you would need to have the root canal opened back up and rechecked for a missing canal)
3!. you could have a cracked tooth, and nothing including a root canal can help a cracked tooth if it goes vertically down the root, and extraction is the only help!.

good luck

*edit***** even if you don't have a permanent crown, you still have a temporary something, either a temp crown, or a temp filling, something was put back in that tooth to replace the missing tooth structure!. otherwise you would have a ginormous hole in the middle of your tooth!. so make sure you are not hitting "high" on your temporary!.!.!.edit*************Www@Answer-Health@Com

What sort of pain are you having!? Aching, throbbing, sensitive to biting!? Do temperatures make it better/worse!? If hot or cold temps are bugging you, there is likely another tooth involved!.

If your dentist recommends taking the tooth out, make sure you seek another opinion (if the treatment wasn't done by an endodontist, now is the time to see one - they deal with chronic pain type situations like this on a daily basis) He/she can help you plan the best course of action for your tooth!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Have your dentist refer you to an endodontist who specializes in root canals!. They will be able to take a picture of your tooth and diagnose the problem!. Sometimes it is just good to have another pair of eyes look at things!. If antibiotics and steroids don't work then it could possibly be that your bite is off in the left to right movement!. First have your dentist adjust the tooth to make sure you are not hitting on it and see if this improves things!. But your next stop should be a specialists office!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
