Question: How do they put people to sleep for an oral surgery!?
I have an oral surgery tomorrow, and I just wanted to know how I will be put to sleep for it!. Will I have a shot or will they use gas!? I am really nervous, so it would be great if I could know right away!.

For oral surgery you are generally put under general anesthesia - this means that you will be "asleep during the procedure" You will be given an IV, probably in the arm, with Versed or another sedative drug!. After you are "asleep" you will then be given local injections (shots) to numb your teeth!. You will not feel these injections!. When the procedure is complete, the oral surgeon will stop your IV and you will wake up!. You won't remember anything about the procedure and will probably feel pretty groggy!. As a side note, "laughing gas" doesn't put you to sleep, it just relaxes the person receiving - you are still awake, completely concious and can feel pain, etc!. This is why general anesthesia is used, and not gas, during oral surgery procedures!.
Don't worry - general anesthesia is the way to go - pain free! Your oral surgeon will give you plenty of instructions/information so you will be well informed!.

I had my teeth pulled and they gave me an option as to whether I wanted the shot or laughing gas!. I got the shots in my gums becuase my stomach can't handle laughing gas!. Don't be nervous you can't feel anything and its over before you know it!

I have it done two ways - once with gas and once with an IV!. Chances are it will be gas!. One, it's less harsh and two, it's your first time being 'under'!.
If it is your first time, you may react a little strange to the gas!. Once you come through afterwards, you may feel a little anxious and may even cry!. This is not to scare you, but to let you know it's completely normal if this happens!. I wish someone would have told me that - I thought something was wrong with me or perhaps it was a bad reaction to the gas!.
