Why does my tooth hurt when I eat frozen food?!

My tooth hurts when I eat frozen food!. It all started when I was eating frozen raspberries one day and all of a sudden I felt this sharp pain on one of the back of my teeth!. Every since then it always is sensitive to cold things!. Why would this be!? Could it be a crack!? When I went to the dentist he said he couldn't detect a crack!. He said it was a cavity and that's why I was feeling sensitivity!. So he fixed my cavity and I still feel sensitivity to frozon food and cold drinks!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

I work for an endodontist (root canal specialist)!. What we find is that any sensitivity with temperatures (particularly heat) following a filling that persists for more than ten days is an indication that the nerve has been damaged to a point where it cannot recover!. Once the nerve is removed, all your temperature sensitivity will go away and you can go back to eating frozen foods!

Sometimes cracks cannot be observed with the naked eye, or even under loupes (the bug-eyed glasses some dentists wear) but that doesn't mean that they aren't present!.

If you are still having sensitivity after two weeks, or are just concerned that things aren't getting better, make an appointment for a consultation with an endodontist!. He/she will take xrays, do tests on the tooth that are different from what your general dentist would perform, and help you determine the best course of action!. Don't worry - they won't offer you a root canal if you don't actually need one!Www@Answer-Health@Com

Sensitivity is a very normal thing after a filling!. The reason is this: the nerve in the tooth got temporarily irritated from being "messed with!." Tooth nerves don't like it when teeth get irritated, so they temporarily hurt until the nerve gets calmed down again!. The time you continue to feel this sensitivity will depend on whether you had an amalgam (silver) filling, or a composite resin (tooth colored) filling!. Amalgams take less time for the sensitivity to go away than resin!. If amalgam, figure a couple of weeks to a max of about a month!. For resin, several weeks, and your tooth could still be sensitive!. Don't worry, this IS completely normal!. You can use Sensodyne toothpaste as a temporary measure until the discomfort goes away!. It will help some!. Also, just stay away from cold foods until that tooth calms down, or eat them on the other side of your mouth!. I hope this helps!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
