As long as you will floss under the wires and have your teeth cleaned professionally, it is ok to leave the retainers!. I just don't like them when I know my patients can't or won't floss under them because it is time consuming!. You can develop serious gum problems if you don't clean the area well enough!. Having the retainers there helps prevent relapse movement of your teeth, but if you develop gum disease and bone loss it isn't worth it!.
If you've had your wisdom teeth removed and you don't grind/clench your teeth at night when you sleep, you should be able to remove the retainers after a few years!. I know Orthodontist will say leave them forever!. Thats fine if you are willing to work harder to keep the gums clean around them!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

I will be getting my braces off in max three months!. orthodontist thinks prob two, and i hope NOT to be getting a lingual retainer! the only downside is it could snap off partially if you eat crunchy food like raw carrots, apples!.!.!.etc all the time!. another downside is it is difficult to keep clean!. i see no problem with keeping it in long term, unless you never brush your teeth or eat crunchy food all the time! talk to your orthodontist if you have any concerns!. good luck! get a new orthodontist for a consult, and ask him/her about it!. other than that, unless you're having problems with it, then just keep em in as long as possible!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
