Sounds like your dentist planned to only give you a filling but the decay was so deep that it extended into the space where the nerve lives!. If he had sent you out that day without cleaning out part of the nerve and placing medicine, you'd have been really upset once the anesthetic wore off!

When you go to the endodontist, he/she will take new xrays and talk to you a bit about your tooth!. Sometimes root canals that were started by another dentist are more difficult for the endodontist to complete, and you should be given this information and your options before treatment starts!.

The endodontist will anesthetize you, remove the temporary filling from your general dentist and proceed with the root canal!. Most endodontists today do the procedure in one visit, take about an hour to complete treatment, and send you back to your general dentist for a crown!.

You won't notice much difference in the treatment at the endodontist's verses your general dentist!. Your tooth will be cleaned, shaped, sterilized and filled (corked up like a wine bottle)

You can expect some slight tenderness, as you would with any dental work, but most people do just fine with a little advil and tylenol!.

The endodontist is fun - he/she has all the cool toys and newest technology to get your root canal completed in the best way possible!. (ok!. maybe FUN is a stretch)Www@Answer-Health@Com

a root canal can involove going to the dentist 2 or 3 times for the treatment!.
Because the nerve is dead, the root canal (in the tooth) needs to be cleaned out!.
What the dentist did for you, was he cleaned it out for you, and put some medication inthe tooth to allow the infection to heal!.
The endodontist will then clean out the root canal again and maybe a third time!. A root canal needs to be cleaned out 2-3 times because there is alot of infection and to make sure the infection does not come back!.
So the endodontist will pretty much do exactly like what your dentist did and once he has cleaned all the infection out he will place a filling in the tooth and the root canal will be done!.
The endodontist will numb your gum and tooth for you so you wont feel anything!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

I had a root canal when I was 9, it's really no big deal!. The worst part is the shots!. I remember getting somewhere around 6 of them!. But after that, you can't feel a thing! The process is actually pretty cool!. What I remember is that they gave me shots, drilled a hole in the tooth to the root, used 2 tiny little files and filed the roots down, packed some cotton in to the tooth, and gave it a temporary filling!. After that, all you have to do is get it permanently filled and it's all taken care of!Www@Answer-Health@Com

OMG I AM AN EXPERT ON DENTAL WORK!!! I HAVE HAD 2 ROOT CANALS ON MY MOLARS, 2 GOLD CROWNS, AND SO MUCH MORE!.

FIRST OFF ROOT CANALS IS NOTHING TO BE MAJORLY WORRIED ABOUT!. IM NOT GOING TO LIE THOUGH THEY ARE VERY UNCOMFORTABLE!. FIRST THEY NUMB YOU REALLY REALLY REALLY GOOD SO YOU DONT FEEL A THING!!! SO NO WORRIES NO PAIN! THEN THEY PUT MOUTH PIECES ON YOUR TEETH TO KEEP YOUR MOTH OPEN!. THEN WHAT THEY DO IS THEY GET THIS RUBBER THING LIKE A UMBRELLA AND THEY PUT IT OVER YOUR MOUTH TO GEET BACTERIA FROM GETTING IN ON YOUR TOOTH!. THEN THEY BEGIN!

THEY DRILL OUT THE WHOLE INSIDE OF YOUT TOOTH SO THE THERE IS NO MIDDLE ONLYTHE SIDES OF THE TOOTH!. THEN COMES THE ONLY DISCOMFORT IN THE WHOLE PROCESS!. THEY SQUIRT SOME BLUE STUFF IN THE MIDDLE AND ITS COLD AND IT IS KINDA LIKE A JERK IN YOUR MOUTH!. BUT IT LAST FOR 2 SECONDS!. THEN THEY HAVE A SCREW LOOKING THING SO THEY BASICALLY SPIN THE ROOT OUT!. ONCE THE ROOT IS OUT YOU WILL DEFINATELY NOT FEEL A THING! =D THEN THEY PUT IN THESE RUBBER LIKE CONES TO FILL THE MIDDLE OF THE TOOTH AND SEAL THE TOP WITH CEMENT AND THEY PUT OP A CROWN TO KEEP EVERYTHING SAFE!. AND YOU MIGHT HEAR THAT THEY HURT MORE AFTERWARDS FROM OTHER ROOT CANAL PATIENTS BUT IT IS NOT TRUE BECAUSE THE THING THAT GIVES ANYTHING FEELING IS THE NERVE AND THEY TOOK IT OUT!. YOUR GUMS WILL BE A LIL TENDER AND SORE BUT NOTHING BIG!. YOU WILL GET MEDS!. WITH ME I HAD LOST MOST OF THE ENAMEL ON MY TEETH CAUSING MAJOOOOOR SENSITIVITY BY GRINDING MY TEETH WHEN I SLEEP!. WHEN I CHEWED FOOD IT HURT SOOOOOOO BAD SO THEN I HAD TO GET MY 2 MOLARS ROOTED!. NOW I LOVE IT AND I WISH ALL MY TEETH HAD ROOT CANALS BECAUSE I CANT FEEL A THING =D

DONT WORRY YOU MAY FEEL A LIL DISCMOFORT BUT NO PAIN AND AFTERWARDS ITS WORTH IT! =D ITS A WALK IN A PARK =DWww@Answer-Health@Com

Your dentist is correct -- the worst is over!. You should not have pain after the root canal other than some discomfort from where the Novocaine needle went in!. It may take some time for the endodontist to do his (or her) work and you may feel pressure, but for the most part there is no pain and you should not ever feel pain in that tooth again!. Just be sure you follow the endodonists instructions for treatment after you get back home!.

I have attached a link that explains a bit about root canals!.

Good luck!
